What is renunciation?-II

#55

Recapitulating-I had mentioned Mahavatar Babaji’s views on renunciation and teachings “Our whole life is nothing but our ‘prarabdh,’ destiny and we must live upto our ‘prarabdh’ with a sense of detachment and that is ‘sannayas’.

I had told you about the life and works of Sri Lahiri Mahasaya in the last post, who was typically a householder yet detached from within and was merely interested in service, meditation and dispersing wisdom. I hope you enjoyed reading it and appreciated my effort in doing some kind of service to my spiritual masters and humanity as well. And I thought to myself that explaining lofty ideas becomes much simpler if we see or come to know a few persons who are good examples and role models for us to follow. For this reason this post is an extension to the previous one.

However, the question that subsequently arises at this point is- if renunciation is just a sense of detachment and is possible while living your present life, which is nothing but your destiny, how should one live as a householder?  How not be completely immersed in the transitory world and do bhakti or devotion and serve the appointed spiritual master? Is it possible? How? Are there any living examples and any footsteps to follow?

I know of one more saintly man or ‘Divya Purush’ to be precise, who falls in this category as a perfect example who played his role perfectly well by being a sannayasi yet was living right in the middle of hustle and bustle of a city life and was in a job and performed all his roles of an individual, employee, devotee and God’s servant, all rolled into an epitome of perfection as untainted and unparalleled was his whole life!!

Whatever little I have gathered over the past few years, I wish to share with you all on this blog. I have been profusely blessed in my personal as well as spiritual life by him, as I chanced upon Swami Dayananda Shaligram one fine day by meeting his living and initiated devotee on 27th April, 2002 by a quirk of fate. Although Shaligram Swami is no more, his good teachings and spiritual vibrations are still here.  His absolute selfless service to humanity still goes on silently through divine, beatific vibrations from his samadhi in Ganeshpuri, about 70 kms away from Mumbai.

Brief life history

Very little is known about Swami Dayananda Shaligram’s birth and early childhood because it is lost in anonymity and it was also his earnest desire to live and remain in obscurity. But it is believed that he was born in a humble family of devout parents somewhere in an unknown, small village in Kerala state bordering with Karnataka in the year 1929 in the month of Bhadrapad,  according to Hindu calendar, that is sometime in August. As a child he used to get vivid dreams of mountains and rivers and ashrams. He was quiet and reserved by nature and was sober and contemplative from the time of his birth.

He could foresee that his life was brief and he had to do ghor tapasya, intense penance during this period itself. He was very focused and one pointed in his pursuits and endeavours which ever he undertook. Much against the wishes of his parents, he once set out on a pilgrimage alone as a youth in search of a guru. He reached the banks of river Narmada where he took a holy dip in the sacred waters. It was there in meditation that he got a divine vision of Swami Nityananda and he heard his guru calling him. He immediately left for Ganeshpuri, pretty directionless but very firm in his resolution to meet his soul mate and beloved Master of many lives.

He somehow reached Ganeshpuri after an arduous journey and met his Guru. None of them spoke a word!  In the divine presence of Swami Nityananda, he could immediately recall his past lives. He could also now recollect when he was in the astral world before he became Swami Dayanand Shaligram, how he had pleaded and prayed to Swami Nityananda to incarnate on the earth as his guru and he would become his humble devotee and servant for mitigating the woes and sufferings of millions of souls on the earth. Swami Nityananda had no desire to come down on the physical plane as He was in bliss in the astral world. But the humble and sweet request of a selfless soul compelled him to fulfill his wish. And subsequently one became the mighty Guru and master Swami Nityananda and the other became a humble devotee, Swami Shaligram. Therefore we must be grateful to Swami Shaligram as it was at his behest that Swami Nityananad came in this world for the welfare of countless people, just in the way we must be thankful to Lahiri Mahasaya for reviving Kriya Yoga in modern world to householders.

Swami Shaligram took refuge in Swami Nityananda’s feet and expressed his desire to serve him as well as work for him. Nityananda  Baba asked him to continue working in his job and along with that do his tapasya, penance.

After a lapse of a few years, he did intense tapasya by keeping maun, silence for three years after which he began serving the people of Mahul, a sleepy hamlet of fishermen on the creeks of Bombay. He began living there after the people appealed to him.  They also served him in their own ways as a token of service and gratitude. Though Shaligram Swami  used to live in Mahul, he made very frequent visits to Ganeshpuri on weekends and other holidays to be with his divine guru for his affection and infallible wisdom. He showered his intense love and reverence for his guru and would always address him as ‘Dev,’ God and called himself a ‘bhakt’, a devotee.

They hardly spoke to each other as their mental communication was very well established, it was unbreakable and flawless. They would sit together in silence gazing in eternity!

Swami  Nityanand guided him in his spiritual practices as well as in practical life too.  He also asked him to serve the people in Mahul which he did happily. Although he had renounced his family in Kerala, Nityananda Baba gave him a much larger family to attend to the old, sick and poor people whom he restored back to life and health. The sick were healed by miracles and divine healings and many people’s unfulfilled desires were fulfilled as and when they approached him.

And then there were a few who loved Shaligram Swami for his extreme devotion and depthless knowledge. But they were just a few! They arrived not for mercy or miracles or material considerations but for salvation or mukti and  bhakti,  devotion. Swami Shaligram showed them their path of salvation according  to their karmic patterns, capabilities and level of endurance. He would promise and assure the seekers that he will always hold their hand to give them much needed mental support to overcome the difficulties of everyday life as well as tough suffering of karmic bondage which they would have to overcome for salvation. He pledged and promised those true and devoted disciples that he will never forsake them until the destination and goal of attaining mukti and  karmic bondage is not attained. Such was his assurance and commitment towards his disciples. He gave advice to commoners, learned, householders and all those who came for help to him. No wonder he was the most beloved of all the many disciples of Swami Nityananda and they both were inseparable, although they hardly spoke to each other. But their inner communication was enduring and unbreakable. Mahavatar Babaji calls Swami Shaligram Swami as my ‘laadla’ or very dear one because of his purity and flawless devotion towards his divine guru.

It holds true even now although he is living no more, that whosoever takes his refuge with a true and pure heart, he will never be disappointed. If we remember him with a pure heart, he responds to our needs without any delay. If we wish to clear our baggage of past lives and find it difficult to carry it out alone, he invisibly lends timely help and rescue. If one is destined to become his disciple due to one’s past karmas, then he will definitely become so.

Swami  Shaligram  loved his guru the most, more than anything in this world so much so that he could never even dream of being separated from his master. So when he discovered that Swami  Nityanand is about to leave the world, he decided to take jeevant samadhi, a conscious exit from his body by some yogic powers by stopping his breath which he had mastered earlier. He relinquished his last breath on 27th April 1961 in Ganeshpuri by chanting Ram rakshastrotra mantra. His samadhi temple was built on that spot and he rests there very close to his master today. He came in this world to show us what should a perfect devotee be like, how should one live in the family as a householder performing his worldly duties and continue doing his sadhana.

Shree Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram

He would chant this mantra for hours and reach an ecstatic state and deep peace in solitude. This post is dedicated in his loving memory as a symbol and epitome of endless love of a disciple towards his spiritual teacher. I consecrate and offer my heart and soul for such exceptional souls who visit earth so rarely yet leave their sweet fragrance for centuries to come. May we all be inspired by a true devotee, a  bhakta, a  yogi and a supremely beautiful soul. May our souls pay homage to such a celestial and virtuous incarnate.

His views on renunciation and his valuable teachings Our whole life is nothing but our destiny.  Do not relinquish your duties.  Live your life with a sense of detachment and not self-punishing involvement.

Do not run away from your life which is your destiny, fulfill your destiny as it is created by no one else but you. Living your destiny with detachment is renunciation and sadhana. Do all the spiritual practices or sadhana while staying at home. Do not reject your present life, instead awake, arise and enlighten yourself where ever you are placed.

He agrees that sometimes living your destiny is very tough and difficult but none the less it is possible to exhaust the karmas with faith and devotion. If we run away or relinquish our duties we will still have to face the same situations in some life ahead in the future lives yet to come and on the contrary we will only pile up the karmas, counted as accumulated or sanchit karmas.

Serve your parents Do not shy away from your duties of serving your parents, children and other elders.

Be fair in your relations at home, place of work and society. Respect and love your wife. Appreciate her contribution in building up the family, do not deprive her of money and other basic facilities. Be humble, kind and understanding to your servants and helpers.

Women must have high moral and spiritual standards because she is the backbone of the entire family and a builder of future generations. She should handle children with love, understanding, affection, intelligence and tenderness, yet be firm when it comes to inculcating good moral and spiritual foundation very early on in life.

Make your family a heaven and a paradise Give respect and love to all members equally.

The elders should not be on an ego trip but help the younger ones to bloom and flower into responsible and worthy citizens and individuals for posterity.

Even if people harass or inflict upon us, we must not retaliate or get tormented Those people who are unkind towards us will in due course of time bear the consequences for their wrong doings.

Be compassionate towards the ill, old and dying people Have mercy on the deprived and poor people and serve them food, clothes and give monetary help.

Serve your Guru by following his teachings. Serve the learned and men of wisdom and intelligence. Fulfill your religious duties.

Be just and fair in your dealing and handling of money Do not indulge and splurge money in evil and immoral ways. Save for your future and also donate generously.

Have mercy and compassion for animals and all other living creatures of God

Swami Dayananda Shaligram’s ashram is in Mahul where annually the birth anniversary of Swami Nityananda is celebrated by the locals even today. He used to celebrate his Guru’s birthday by feeding the masses and chanting ‘Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram’ for a week. Swami Nityananda is in bliss on this day and blesses all who come to take his ‘darshan’ on 30th Nov every year. Those who can visit Mahul ashram should go and take the blessings of both the divine souls on this auspicious day.

Mahul Ashram

The devotees of Mahul and other places perform a pooja and bhandara every year on 27th April on the samadhi divas in  memory and respect of Swami Dayanand Shaligram in Ganeshpuri.

What is renunciation?-I

#54

I concluded my important tasks of the day on 8th afternoon and I was longing for some sleep. As I rested on the bed closing my eyes, a while later, I slipped into subtle meditation with this vivid image of Shri Mahavatar Babaji emerging before my eyes.

The picture had a very calming Prussian blue background and this particular colour also gives a very mystique aura to the personage of Babaji, at least to me it seems so. The mere presence and thought of revered Babaji instills a sense of protection and security within me. I feel that He is ever present, silently watching over me like a mother bird in the sky. There is an unquestionable assurance of safety and shelter in the celestial love that He emanates for his disciples. Implicit trust resides in the hidden caves of my heart for the unending love that He showers for me and my dear ones. So when his emergence was being indicated, I simply became peaceful and relaxed.

Without making me wait, He began to communicate by murmuring, “My dear child, I am keeping an eye on you. I am aware that even amidst frenzied days, you are collecting your thoughts on and off to write the next article on renunciation. You have also read a few pages of Holy Sri Bhagwad Gita to recollect what you have imbibed some years back. Lahiri Mahasaya was my foremost disciple. I want you to dedicate one article in his memory and honour”.

Now alongside with this ongoing communication, I also had the privilege of having a mental picture of Lahiri Mahasaya with his blissful face and unblinking half closed eyes, as though he was oblivious to the crazy world and was in peace in spite of the chaotic nature of the maddening world that one lives in. I was very intrigued by the fact that Babaji had virtually scanned my mind and was peeping inside its concurring developments overtly. It is true that in the last few days, I have been randomly getting some glimpses and mental images of Lahiri Mahasaya on and off which assured me that something auspicious was about to take place. And I was wondering what could be its connotation. On those words of Babaji, I immediately connected the chain of developments and waited in anticipation as to what was coming up next.

Babaji continued, “I know that recently a desire has germinated in your heart of paying homage to Lahiri Mahasaya by visiting his samadhi. I will fulfill your wish this time. Though you have gone to Haridwar several times but never even knew that the some sacred ashes of my beloved disciple rests there. Your time had not come then, but this time you will pay homage to him.”

Well, before I put all my thoughts into words, I will first of all pay my obeisance to Yogavatar Lahiri Mahasaya right here. My humble prayer at his holy feet to guide me to write this post and I also seek his divine blessings for myself and all the sincere seekers for quick spiritual progression and ascent.

To start on, a brief life sketch of this great mahayogi of India becomes essential at this juncture.

Shyama Charan Lahiri was born in Bengal in the year 1828 on September, the 30th in a pious Brahmin family. The family worshipped Lord Shiva, the lord of Yoga and they also had a Shiva temple in the house. At the age of three or four, he was often found sitting in certain yoga postures effortlessly.

The family later moved to Banaras, an ancient city on the banks of holy Ganga, after their house and the Shiva temple were lost to shifting of the course of a nearby river. Very early on, he showed signs of a gifted boy by being a linguistic. He received instructions in Sanskrit, Bengali, Urdu, French as well as English.  He studied Vedas, listened eagerly to the scriptural discussions of learned Brahmins and also recited the shlokas from Gita. Bathing in Ganges, reciting shlokas and worshipping were a part of his daily routine. At appropriate time he got married and became a house holder. His work as an accountant in Military engineering dept of the English govt took him all over India. After the death of his father, he took on the responsibilities of the entire family and also bought a house for them in Banaras.

In 1861, Lahiri Mahasaya was transferred to Ranikhet, in the foothills of the Himalayas. One afternoon, while rambling in the hills, he heard a distant voice calling out his name on Drongiri mountain. After climbing a bit further, he found his lost guru Shri Mahavatar Babaji on a spot on one of the ledges. Babaji smiled mysteriously and called him ‘Gangadhar’, his name of previous life. He awakened his memory of past life by touching his forehead gently. He then initiated him in the ancient science and technique of Kriya yoga. He asked him to revive this lost spiritual science and technique of salvation in modern world and to remain a householder, whereas Lahiri Mahasaya wanted to renounce the world after meeting his beloved master of past life. So much was his love and adoration for his exalted master.

On the contrary, Babaji asked him to be a karam yogi and give knowledge and guide people from his home. And that’s what he did all his life after meeting his teacher. At his house, he initiated countless people into Kriya Yoga from all walks of life and religions. Over time, more and more people flocked to receive his teachings of Kriya. He organized many study groups and he gave religious discourses on Bhagwat Gita too.

He continued his job as an accountant and supported his family. He was a Master of Kriya Yoga and retired on a modest pension. More and more visitors came to see him as time passed and he seldom left his sitting room available to all who sought his guidance and darshan. He attained a very high state of ecstasy, a state of super consciousness or samadhi. He had overpowered sleep and he would be found sitting in an interlocked lotus posture all night giving spiritual knowledge to deserving people. He led a harmoniously balanced life of a great householder and became an inspiration to thousands of men and women.

Dear friends, I wish to reveal a fact to you that initially Babaji had instructed Lahiri Mahsaya to be strict in passing on and unraveling the holy science of meditation to only the qualified students. But at this point, Lahiri Mahasaya pleaded to Babaji to permit him to initiate and communicate Kriya deeksha to householders too who were sincere seekers, although at first they may not be able to vow themselves to complete inner renunciation. He argued that if Kriya was withheld from them, they would never attempt the road to freedom.

Babaji agreed to his plea and said, “So be it. Give Kriya to all those who humbly ask for help. And that divine wish has been expressed through you.” Mahavatar Babaji also said after a moment of silence,  “Repeat this to each of your disciple the majestic promise from Bhagwat Gita that even a little practice of this dharma will save you from great fear of suffering of reoccurring cycles of life and death”. So it is only because of Lahiri Mahasaya’s kindness and compassionate gesture that all the householders began receiving the initiation of Kriya in modern times otherwise this secretive science was in the hands of rishis and sages and was passed on from teacher to disciple. My pranam to this Yoga avatar!!

Now to come back to what happened on that providential afternoon, Babaji also said this to me, “Tell all that I like a karamyogi, and not a karam sannayasi. You must also add a few related verses from Bhagwad Gita for all to know about what I have told you.

Karamyogi is a person who neither relinquishes his duties nor renounces the world. A Karamyogi is a person who performs all his actions with his mind united with God while a karam sannayasi is a person who is indifferent or disinterested towards his personal or familial duties. He relinquishes his assigned duties. Some may even become isolated from the world in search of truth and peace. Renunciation is not the solution.

Our whole life is nothing but our ‘prarabdh’ (destiny) and we must live upto our prarabdh with a sense of detachment and that is sannayas.

The mind must be nullified of worldly attachments to attain purity of thoughts and mind. We must act but with intelligence and wisdom.

Simultaneously, we must do actions to enhance and brighten our future.

We must have desire to improve our lives by alleviating our present level of consciousness. We must renounce not actions but the desire of fruit of our actions.

Exclude unnecessary details – instead lead a simple, progressive and  pious life. This life is given to us to improve our present life. It is through karmas that we can refine our nature towards immortality, deathless state and infinity. Until then, we should progress and cultivate our spiritual nature.”

As per Mahavatar Babaji’s counsel, I am now quoting a few apt verses from Bhagwad Gita Chapter V verse 10, 11, &12 to further substantiate our point of discussion today.

Brahmanadhaya karmani sanga  tyaktva karoti ya I

Lipyate na sa papen padmapatramivambhasa II 10

He who acts offering all actions to God and shaking off all attachment remains untouched by sins as the lotus leaf by water.

Kayen mansa budhaya kewalayirindriyairapi I

Yogin karam kurvanti sanga tyaktavatmashudhaye II 11

The karamyogi performs actions only with his senses, mind, intellect and body as well, withdrawing his feeling of mine and shaking off sense of attachment for the sake of self- purification of inner self.

Yukta karmafalam tyaktva shantimaproti naishtikim I

Ayukta kamkaren fale sakto nibadhyate II

Offering the fruit of action to God, the karamyogi attains everlasting peace in the form of God realization, whereas he who works with a selfish motive, being attached to the fruit of actions through desires gets tied down.

                                                                                                                                                                (To be continued)

A note- Our whole life is nothing but our ‘prarabdh’ (destiny) and we must live upto our prarabdh with a sense of detachment and that is sannayas or renunciation. This thought has been explained explicitly earlier in’ Create your destiny’ and later in What is renunciation?-II

Free will

God created the law of free will and God also created the law of cause and effect. And He himself will not violate the law. God’s laws are exact and cannot be changed. We have the free will to obey them or disobey them. Obedience will bring harmony and disobedience will bring us more troubles.

Free will is not the liberty to do whatever one likes, but the power of  doing  whatever one sees ought to be done, even in the face of otherwise overwhelming impulse. There lies the freedom indeed.

God has given us free will to choose before we attempt or initiate any action. But once the action is performed we have no control or choice in the nature of the outcome. We have a choice,  we have a free will whether we wish to do good or bad and also whether we wish to act at all or not.

Evil will. Negative impulses, wrong attitude, distorted reasoning, lack of faith in God’s mercy and redemption, lack of faith in God’s justice and fairness and his deliverance prompts man to do inharmonious, sinful and unwise actions.

Evil thoughts will culminate into evil acts. Negate evil will by good will. Always have pleasant, positive and harmonious thoughts.

Enough light has been thrown on a very puzzling topic such as this called – karma. It will now be helpful if after reading the three posts one by one,  all the three are read at a stretch to get a hold of the subject.

To wrap up:

Nityananda Baba’s words of wisdom and sagacious advice

This topic was initiated on the eve of the festival of Holi with the inspiration and guidance of Swami Nityananda of Ganeshpuri as mentioned in the beginning. His message for all of us is that like the vibrant colours of Holi, our lives should also have beautiful colours with streaks of knowledge, wisdom, joy and oneness with the real power. Though it may seem difficult to you, but practicing what is prescribed here will make it happen. Whether we are in service or business, students or working, housewives or seekers, whatever our outward appearance and whatever our duties that we perform, our mind should be in with tune and constant communion with God. Real yoga is the union of individual mind with the Universal Force which generates peace and joy no matter where in the world we are placed and in what conditions we live. All that is required is mind’s connection to the Lord.

When the mind dissolves completely with the Light of God, that is real sannyas, tyaag or renunciation.

Swami Nityananda with his foremost disciple Dayananda Shaligram

He advices us to do-Yoga, dhyan, karma, bhakti. First of all have yoga or union with God with dhyana or meditation and simultaneously do karmas or actions  which are good and harmonious and which ultimately will give bhakti or devotion. To realize this, submit yourself and surrender all your actions to God.Your welfare lies in surrendering all your actions to God. Clean and purify your mind. Cleansing and refinement is a huge task in itself, a long drawn exercise and activity. When the mind is immersed in God, it becomes clean. He also assures us and says not to worry or be anxious. And I am with you, you come forward take a step, I will take ten steps to hold your hand.

Initiate new karmas by virtue of good intention on the foundation of good sankalp or thought force. In order to receive the inspiration of God, keep your mind pure; to make your life prosperous and happy, lead a simple and pure life and do away with pretensions, falsehood, hypocrisy, lies, envy and deceit. Live right, act right. Withdraw yourself from the crazy mad rat race of today’s life and find some time for God realizations. Never do something after which you have to regret. Do not betray others and never betray your Guru. Speak the truth and have a noble conduct. Be in the company of wise and noble men. Unless you worship God, you will never become fearless, peaceful and glorious. Until you reach your target, do not rest. Ignite the flame of illumination within you, instill love in your heart, think well of others. God will give you everything by satisfying all your desires, you should only have a good intention and objective. Have a sense of purpose in your life, all the rest will be taken care of.

I would like to finish this post with this beautiful shloka.

The last verse of Bhagwat Gita says:

Yatra Yogeshwarah Krishno yatra Partho dhanurdhanah I

Tatra shrivijayo bhutirdhruva nitirmatirmam II

Wherever there is Bhagwan SriKrishna, and wherever there is Lord of Yoga and wherever there is Arjuna, the weilder of Gandiva bow, goodness victory, glory and unfailing righteousness are there, such is my conviction.

Bhagwad Gita chapter 2, verse 47

Karmanyevadhikaraste ma faleshu kadachana I

Ma karmafalheturbhurma te sangoastvakarmani II

Translation

You certainly have the right for prescribed activities but never at any time in the yielding results. There should be no attachment in either performing your actions or the results of them.

Interpretation

The mind of the worldly person is turbulent by nature, it is full of cravings for worldly stuff, and is made up of dualities of likes and dislikes. The senses carry away forcibly the mind of the man. The sub conscious mind or chitta has impure tendencies called sanskaras and when actions are performed with hidden tendencies of ego, greed, evil or selfish motives the result of the actions will have a direct negative impact on the doer.  Therefore, Bhagwan Krishna suggests that you should not worry about the results, just do your actions properly with sincerity and devotion.

The results or fruits of our actions are delivered according to the intention of our karmas.

If the intention of our thoughts of action is good, nature bestows beneficial and harmonious results. If we perform actions with impurities like jealousy, anger, hate, greediness, ego, the results will have harmful consequences and impact us adversely. As the man has very little knowledge about his own well being, he does actions which are contrary to his spiritual as well as personal growth. Therefore Bhagwan Krishna advocates that do not eye for the results, only perform your duties, the call of the hour. He says that you should not desire for the result primarily because the impurities of the mind will contaminate or adulterate your results.

It is only by being detached, that the dross of worldly impurities are wiped out from the chitta gradually.  Our inner self gets purified till a stage of unselfishness is achieved. The mind and senses are thus at rest and composure is accomplished.

If we become detached, the mind becomes stable. A calm and stable mind experiences peace. Yoga of equanimity for wise men possessing an equipoise mind renouncing the fruit of actions are freed from the shackles of birth and attain blissful supreme state.

Offering the fruit of actions to God, the karmayogi attains everlasting peace in the form of God realization, whereas he who works with selfish motives, being attached to the fruit of actions through ego, desires gets tied down.

Cave of rishi Ved Vyasa. The cave is in the shape of a book!

Once I had gone on a pilgrimage a few years ago in the Himalayan region. I have had the wonderful  opportunity of sitting in silence in the cave of the great rishi Ved Vyas in a village called Mana near Badrinath.

Sage Ved Vyas is the writer of Holy Bhagwat Gita, the brilliant book on self realization and knowledge of the Supreme. It was there that I had a brief unspoken mental communication with the spirit of the rishi. I was informed that I was a blessed soul because it is with the kripa or grace of Swami Nityananda that I was able to comprehend the doctrine of Karma although theoretically I had understood it on the surface long time ago. I have been able to understand since then the meaning of shlokas, verses  of Gita far better and learnt how our actions have an effect on us now and in future and hence in turn changing the course of lives to come.

It is true that since I took sanctuary in Swami  Nityananda of Ganeshpuri for spiritual and worldly solace, I have been able to understand the ideology of Karma and correspondingly also its demonstration in practical life cases.

He has  since the time of my establishing immense faith in him, revealed and explained in detail with examples in my everyday life the working of the cause and effect, the meaning of Karma and karmafal, fruits of our actions and how one’s life depends, shapes, re-moulds on the karmas that we perform. And even so, why and what for are we distressed or enjoying the present life phase with clarity and exactitude.

All along in my life predominantly during lean periods, I used to become desperate and anxious to control the flow of adverse circumstances by altering my own thoughts positively, but all  in vain. It was during such times that I reflected on how one can have control of his life and how not to allow ill effects of past actions to impact me gravely. The earnest desire to have a control over my life led me to believe and trust that there is a master key to all this and the saints are the knower of this riddle called karma. Not only that, they are even possessors of the master key to this  serious puzzling riddle I soon understood.

My intense search and thereafter serendipitous turn of events, took me to Ganeshpuri in those days where I was blessed by His holiness Swami Nityananda who gave me silent initiation or deeksha right at the outset by awakening my intuitive faculties. In the course of this process, He sharpened my sixth sense by clearing my mind of the cobwebs of past karmic influences. Since then, He has been bestowing on me the puzzling knowledge of karma and as each day passes, I get a clearer insight on what happens when we do a particular action and how we suffer because of the imminent consequences. Simultaneously, which actions are to be performed, what attitude should be kept and what decision should be taken based on the given insight. Which actions should I perform, which one should I never even think of, leave alone do, and which ones will give me lasting happiness and joy? How can I not have desire or ego yet do my duties so that I am able to offer every bit of my action to the Supreme? All these philosophical questions which were always haunting me have been thoroughly answered by Nityananda Baba’s graciousness during meditation and lull state of mind. And to embark on this great voyage, I will  first quote two relevant quotes from the Holy Bhagwad Gita.

 Chapter -4

Kim karma kimkarmaeti kavyoapyatra mohita I

Tatte karma pravkshyami yagygyatva mokshyaseshubhat II 16

What is action and what is inaction? Even men of intelligence are puzzled over this question. Therefore I shall expound to you the truth about action, knowing which you will be freed from its evil effects, its binding nature.

Karmano huapi bodhvyam ch vikarmana: I

Akarmanashch bodhvyam gahana karmano gati: II 17

The truth about action must be known and the truth about inaction also must be known; even so the truth about prohibited action must be known. For mysterious are its ways.

First of all let us consider three important terms which are in Sanskrit in verse no.17.  They are – karma, vikarma and akarma.

Karma literally means ‘to do’. Karma means an action or an activity that we perform.

Vikarma are the prohibited actions called sins or paap in Hindi. Paap are of three types-  paap, mahapaap and jaghanya paap.

These are sins in increasing order and in intensity and therefore severe punishment is ordained by the lord through nature.( Refer  post-How to live today-?)

Akarma means non attachment to an action

Akarma-doing what is right for us at that moment by submitting our desire, will or ego and being unaffected by its following outcome, knowing completely well that it is in our best interest although at that moment our mind may not be at rest and we might have doubts on the abilities of God’s power.  This is the main underlying principle, the essence of the sacred book Gita where Bhagwan Krishna preaches Arjuna not to worry about the consequences of his actions and do whatever Krishna tells him because Krishna is antaryami, the knower of all the buried thoughts, the knower of all our past and future lives. Being akarmi or non doer is a state of mind, it is the door to heaven, a means to gain stability of mind, the secret of enjoying uninterrupted joy and a release from appalling effects in the form of sorrow, gloom, mental tension, pain, misfortune, poverty etc in future.

Our actions are performed in three ways- physically, verbally and mentally Kayic, vachic, mansik respectively.

Mansik karmas Out of all these, maximum karmas are created by an individual mentally and quietly by thinking evil thoughts, manipulating and scheming, planning ill of others, jealousy, distrust and other such damaging thought processes. Actions based on such thoughts unquestionably construct negative results either now or in future. These karmas are termed mansik karmas. Simultaneously positive karmas are also created mentally when we visualize positively, do constructive things for the welfare of all and wish well for others.

As humans are more prone to create negative karmas mentally, the solution to this is meditation and other concentration techniques to stop wavering and running of mind. The mind is fidgety by nature but a calm and contolled mind provokes us to act wisely and think prudently.

Vachik karmas are those actions which are performed verbally.

Draupadi called Duryodhana a blind man spontaneouslly and alas she had to go through such terrible times since she had to face untold hardships later in her life although she regretted her unthinking act. Most of us speak whatever we feel like unaware that every word is being recorded, good or bad. ‘Think before you speak’ is a very significant line to remember as this piece of wisdom is very helpful in all circumstances.

Kayic karmas Kaya in Sanskrit means body hence it is simple to understand that actions performed by the body means kayic karma.   Gita  is more explicit when it is said that actions are performed with karam indriya, i.e. The organs of actions are hands, legs, sex organs, and the rest of the four senses. Actions performed with tongue is in the category of vachik karma.

So Lord Krishna advises Arjuna that although the mind is extremely restless and almost impossible to control, you can curb it by bringing it back to a still point repeatedly and by being dispassionate towards worldly attachments- that is do abhyas and vairagya.

Abhyas means practice and vairagya means dispassion.

As maximum karmas are constructed clandestinely with the mind, it is repeatedly stressed by the saints to control the mind and the senses. So remembrance of God, meditation, silencing and controlling the mind by stopping it from running here and there by various  techniques  is a good karma.

 (To be continued)

Written on the eve of Holi, the celebration day with the transmission of ethereal, astral rays of Swami Nityananda’s kind grace . A gift of revelation, insight and clearing of the cloudy dust of ignorance by the symbolic fires of Holika on an auspicious day)

The Light of the world-Shri Mahavatar Babaji-II

#50

A message of peace and harmony

Whatever inhuman acts and events that have been happening in the past so many years, the recently aggravated violence in the form of mass destruction, ghastly killings of innocent people by various radical outfits, political unrest  all over the globe are absolutely against the nonnegotiable values of humanity. It is a sign of degeneration and waning human values of tolerance, compassion, sympathy and kindness, lack of motivation of political will at the governance level by the people in power. Violence in our current society is on the rise because of their apathy, selfish motives, lack of understanding of the growing of menace and dangers of terrorism. It will not be an exaggeration to state here that violence has grown and is spreading more specifically because of lack of goodwill at every level of human society as well. We, as sensitive human beings must not forget that if we douse and set a house on fire in our neighborhood, are our backyards safe? We are one world, one planet and one family. Must we not remember this that unless we make our family happy we can never have a peaceful life for ourselves?

And whenever there is an increase in anti God activities in our environment or somewhere on our earth, we must spend more time and attention in remembering the omnipresent, merciful, blissful God. Worship God as Jyot or Light more on such ominous occasions, wish for peace in your hearts and bring down peace on earth by meditating on white Light of God. Think as though white light from heaven is dispersing and filtering over our mother earth. Visualize mother earth as a white pyramid of crystal of light and meditate under the crystal of beatific pure Cosmic Light of God.

Dear friends and responsible citizens of this world, please know these are not my words, views or opinion but the message of His Holiness Sri Mahavatar Babaji. He is a messenger of God to spread love, peace and compassion. It pains and saddens him and he is doused with grief and sorrow when we make our lives deplorable and miserable by our own wretched acts of violence and inhuman acts. To understand his philosophy and teachings, we must first of all get our own perspectives right. He has explained to us in detail here that we ought to understand and reflect as to how and why is our society degenerating so swiftly and what are our responsibilities in its reformation, revival and regeneration. It is advisable that we take some immediate positive and constructive steps in big or small measure towards realizing our goals of achieving oneness of god and unity amongst ourselves as a world family.

Mahavatar Babaji  is the torchbearer, a beacon of Light in the world today

Definition of Mahavatar – Maha means great, avatar means the descent of divinity into flesh. In simple terms, this means the great ascent of Godliness and holiness in a being. But much greater than all this is the spiritual stature of Babaji, much, much beyond the understanding of limiting barriers of an average mind. His accomplishments are rare and impossible to comprehend for us because he has transcended all human limitations and boundaries. Babaji in Hindi simply means revered Father. For affection and convenience, we can address Him only as Babaji, although He is addressed by many other names by his devotees all over the world now.

Revered Babaji leads a life of a recluse and shuns public gaze because He meditates most of the time in the Himalayas with His band of trusted disciples.

In between they discuss matters of the world which are of profound concern; they need to be addressed on time, particularly pertaining to the preservation of our planet and its inhabitants. During meditation, He addresses mentally the predicaments, worries and questions related to the spiritual growth and foundation of the devotees as well as of any other people which He answers through the medium of telepathic transmission and diffusion of light.

He also does spiritual atonement from time to time so that the benefits of His tapas can be transferred and transmitted in all direction in order to maintain and regulate order, harmony and peace in this world. And in addition to all this, he prays and meditates for the spiritual evolution of human race as a whole, although the pace of human evolution is remarkably slow. Nonetheless, it is one of His major responsibilities that He undertook from Father Divine when He was a young lad of fourteen, the tender age at which He took saurabh samadhi at Badrinarayan. His disciples, who are with him, assist him and give Him a helping hand in his enormous and unfathomable endeavor of world reformation in spite of concurring cyclic ages of major changes. The many disciples who are away from Him physically also work as channels of His worldwide mission for man’s progress and those who are now in the astral world also contribute by sending out positive waves of mind thoughts to our earth for spiritual reinforcement!!

He is undergoing tapas for one more significant reason today. His very intense tapasya or atonement is also for the unforgivable, intolerable sins of those people who for the sake of terrorism and political upheavals, violate God’s natural laws and propagate violence, hatred, unrest and undertake innocent killings.

In the past, like Him were born other prophets like Jesus Christ, Lord Rama and Guru Nanak who took on the sins of the sinners for their redemption and atonement. It is the wish of God that no impure or sinner should interact with Babaji or see Him personally as He is unimaginably sanctimonious and pure and the chaste and holy saints have to suffer unduly. Babaji attributes his solitary nature to this fact- He prefers silence and peace of the quiet mountains in contrast to the noise of the maddening city lives!!

There are 2 types of forces in this world-constructive and destructive, positive and negative respectively since eternity. They have been there since the earth was created. When the equilibrium of both these forces is disturbed because of man’s misdeeds or ignorance there are natural calamities, disasters, misfortune, tragedies. Evil and immoral acts by humans like corruption, selfishness, greed, lust for power and money give rise to regression, anarchy, disorder, turmoil and  mayhem.

Cut throat competition exists today among men and between countries and societies for the sake of dominance as well as superiority, status symbol and power. Once the country becomes powerful, the ruling people of those countries exploit other nations to maintain the achieved material prosperity and affluence. Competition is good as long as it is healthy and done with the right spirit and sole intention to excel and not  to  finish or demolish others. One country prevents and stops other countries from progressing which is against ethics and universal laws. Destroying others is animal instinct for survival. Survival instincts can only be gotten rid of if we discover our real identity. The true nature of man is divine- love, peace, hope, amity, mercy, friendship, compassion are his attributes. So love all, do not hate is his message.

This post is neither politically motivated nor is it a political comment but as humans where we share the same planet, same resources our lives are without doubt interlinked as we come from the same God. We, as responsible and conscientious citizens of our planet must make a pledge now to replace hatred with peace, jealousy with love, frustration with satisfaction, rebellion with obedience, rivalry with companionship and violence with mutual understanding and goodwill for the sake of ourselves and the generations to come. Our earth is established and rests on eternal laws of humanity or Sanatan Dharma. Babaji believes that Sanatan Dharma in unchangeable and is forever suitable in every society or nation at any given time or age. It can be followed by anyone and needs no formal initiation.

What is Sanatan Dharma?

Because of attaining incredible yogic powers, Babaji is approximately 1,800 years old now. (those who have just come in, please read-The light of the world-Shri Mahavatar Babaji-I) He is  alarmed regarding the erosion of human values at a frightening pace in the last two centuries.

Sanatan in Sanskrit means eternal Dharma means righteousness. Sanatan Dharma means eternal Truth, teachings and traditions. The eternal truth is also about Universal principles that make up the spiritual lifestyle that helps us to uncover the Divine that flows through all things. Dharma has a profound meaning. It means as one’s own duties in individual sense and globally it means the universal law by which we are bound together. Dharma means something that should be borne all the time. Thus it becomes a powerful means that saves us from catastrophe and leads to all round development and prosperity.

Sanatan Dharma is considered to be the oldest religion, no one knows how old and there is no known founder. Sanatan Dharma has given birth to other main religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism and some other offshoots.

Every religion is based on underlying same principles – that of oneness of God, non-violence, charity, love, kindness and being good human beings. They all speak and propagate the same principles. Vedas are the original scriptures of Sanatan Dharma. Bhagwat Geeta complied by Rishi Ved Vyas has the essence of all the Vedas. Bhagwan Krishna laid great stress on performing the right actions so that the consequences are positive in the form of peace, prosperity and harmony everywhere.

Today’s society runs on competition, consumerism and capitalism, the three evils of our modern society. Moderation is the key word. Life should be comfortable, there should be no deficiencies of essentials but blind rat race of materialism, hoarding, power struggle, status symbol is a sign of ruination which is tearing apart the very fabric of our once peaceful co-existing society.  If we continuously violate the laws of- nature, morality, society, religions and spirituality it is going to prove detrimental as the consequences are grave.

This is Kaliyug, the age of machines. Vedic texts have prophesied the following ill signs of Kaliyug. They are as following-rampant decline in morality and absence of conscience, restlessness of mind, man will not hesitate to kill his own blood even brother for maya i.e. land, woman, money or power; downfall of woman’s chastity and fidelity, dishonest  and deceitful  males, rise in adultery, decline and corruption of intellect and intensifying of sensual pleasures and lust, drastic decline in numbers of trees, birds animals, shrinking of mountains and rivers, extension of oceans and inward bound seas and oceans, excess and intolerable heat and cold and untimely premature deaths. Isn’t this what we call global warming and climate change today?

Kaliyug is man created, his own creation for greed, to satisfy materialistic urges and exploitation as well as mismanagement of natural resources. We have to turn the wheel from Kaliyug to Sat yug – an era of truth, peace, order and humanitarianism by inculcating tolerance, forbearance and cooperation for preservation and survival of humanity’s sake.

Babaji advocates practice of Yoga propounded by sage Patanjali, the author of Yoga sutra. Yoga is above all religions and can be practiced along with any other religions that we follow or have faith in.

It is Mahavatr Babaji who revived Kriya Yoga in modern world through Lahiri Mahasaya, the lost science of God union as mentioned in Bhagwat Geeta. Kriya Yoga accelerates spiritual evolution of man and can be practiced in spite of any belief or faith of the practitioner.

Babaji has vowed that until the augmentation of satyug, he will retain his indestructible body to carry out the divine’s work. The various cycles on our earth may come and go but the eternal principles of Sanatan Dharma will never cease to change. Mahavatar Babaji will come out open in public in World congress of religions meet around the year 2053 or so if everything goes right. He wishes that His centuries old mission of spiritual evolution and progress of the human race will be completed by then with the grace of God.

We all have a role to play in bringing about a new age by becoming the harbingers of the Dawn, dawn of Truth, peace, sincerity, willingness and earnest desire to make our earth a better place to live in.

Conclusion-

Babaji is Smritgaami. Smrit means to remember and gaami means to come which when translated  means that whenever you remember or think of Babaji, He will respond to your calls.

So meditate on Monday nights between 9 to 10. Fix your gaze on Babaji’s visual image at Kutastha, the point between the two eyebrows and think of Him, pray to Him and talk to Him like a child to his father. Take his refuge, he will free you from many unbearable sufferings. He will mitigate your worldly and spiritual problems and will guide you in every way. This sansara , the world is a booby trap and we do not know how to navigate the deep seas. If you take his shelter, you will be under his tutelage, protection and guidance, no harm will come over you and you will be able to overcome all problems however big or small. Babaji is our oarsman, He will navigate for us and sail our boat in this bewildering, unpredictable world.

(Read chapter 33 of Autobiography of a Yogi titled ‘Babaji, the Yogi-Christ of Modern India’ by Sri Paramhansa Yogananda, which is dedicated to his withdrawn nature and formidable spiritual stature. On the advent of publication of this great classic by a mahayogi Yoganandji, it was the first time that something was written about Babaji in print in the late forties, such is his reticent nature out of sheer humility)

You may read ‘Holy Science’ by Swami Sri Yukteshwar Giri on underlying similar truths and principles of Hinduism and Christianity. Also ‘The prophet’ by Khalil Gibran to read the never changing truths and philosophy of life)

Kundalini Shakti-III

#49

What is Kundalini Shakti?

Kundalini Shakti is the procreation energy lying unused at the lower region of the body for very long. People who follow Tantra Yoga are those people who worship the feminine form of the Universal Force. They perceive the Universe as feminine energy and wish to have atma sakshat or God realization by arousing and stirring up Kundalini Shakti in them. The various forms or depiction of Kundalini Shakti in Indian mythology are of Goddess Durga, Kali, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi and a few others. They all are various images and forms of Divine Mother with different powers attained for different purposes in this universe. Ultimately all the devotees of Divine Mother have one goal whether they are aware of it or not- to realize God by worshiping the eternal Primary Force as feminine.

In our body, we have three main nadis or life currents-Ida, Pingala and Sushmna. In most of the persons at the normal level of consciousness, the energy currents pass through only two channels Ida and Pingala. The central Sushumna is dormant. Ida lies to the left side and has cool currents and is compared to the moon, while Pingala is located to the right and compared to the Sun and has warm currents passing through it. Sushumna is situated in the centre of both these nadis. It remains dormant and cannot be accessed without proper activation and expert supervision. It plays a crucial role for the sadhak at an advanced stage of spiritual intensification and expansion. Activation of Sushumna is mandatory for higher realizations.

Importance of Sushumna Nadi

If one takes a peep inside our spine, it will show that it is a hollow tube and is like a conduit pipe in which are located multitude of nerves or nadis and nerve ends. The fact is that out of these three nadis majority of people function on only the two nerve channels-ida and pingala as there is no current in the middle nadi and one may wonder why. Sushuma is a special nerve used for carrying very fine currents of electromagnetic rays from higher levels of Consciousness. Once this is aroused, the man is capable of approaching and accessing very high levels of knowledge and subtle comprehension as well as divine perceptions. Kundalini  Shakti is often compared to a serpent with three and half coils. It is believed so for the simple reason that Sushumna is coiled at the base, at the tip of the tail bone lying floppy and curled. To demystify the myth, please know that it is coiled and curly just because it has no current passing through it and is in disuse for so long as has been explained in detail in the text of previous post. One activated it is straightened up.

At the subtlest level, the release at last

At muladhar chakra lie the remnant energies of present and past life incarnations which block the Kundalini Shakti. The dust like energies which are in many layers cover the Sushumna. But when the soul begins to redeem itself through purification by doing good karmas, silence, peace, doing meditation, pranayam,  eating saatvik food, his mind and heart becomes dirt-free. Dust of ego, vanity, desires, greed and similar vices begin to fade away as he undergoes intense tapas. At this juncture, the Guru wherever he is, through his prakash punj or blazing light sends his disciple shakti through his sankalpa, mind power which we call shakti paat. This is transmission of rays of Divine light through mind power. That light enters and penetrates our navel and whatever unharvested seeds of karmas are still remaining in the muladhar are now disintegrated and burnt by the guru.

The specific action consequently reduces our karmic suffering in the future to come by eliminating difficult life situations in the form of diseases, lack of prosperity, physical sufferings, bad luck and mental  turbulence and so on. As the Light from the Guru arrives at the navel area, the dormant Sushumna begins to throb. That’s why people may find tingling sensations at the base on arousal of Kundalini Shakti. The Shakti after stirring up muladhar chakra, rotates and spins spirally inside the spinal cord cleaning the conduit pipe. The vortexes or energy chakras get cleaned up of the lying of unwanted elements of toxins and debris of future karmic consequences as the shakti rises up.

The risen supposed serpent or Kundalini cleans the lower chakras and when it rushes and reaches the agya chakra, the blazing light intensifies our vision by giving us clarity of thoughts and finer perceptions. With this light are awakened many other micro nadis which help us to cultivate and open of the third eye, Shiva’s third eye providing paranormal vision and sixth sense. Thus an apparatus and a medium are created through which we can now connect directly to the Cosmic Consciousness without effort. The third eye is the door to heaven because communication with the Almighty is possible through intuition, a faculty in humans which can never mislead or misguide us. Meditation aids in further fine tuning with the voice of God. Intuition or the sixth sense is extremely essential for humans because there is no possibility of erring and suffering as the Voice of God will always tell you to do actions which are in welfare of all.

The silent and extremely gentle shakti further moves up from agya chakra to the upper portions of the body reaching the cerebrum or sahastrar chakra to act on it. The crown chakra is the centre of God realization and divine illumination. The whole process takes a few weeks or months or years or lives depending on each individual’s positive force of good karmas and is not an instant phenomenon as made out to be by some unthinking people.

As explained earlier, smriti is a very important factor and  tool in God realization. In smriti lies embedded all the memories of past life incarnations that we have ever lived since our inception. With activation of Kundalini, we are able to see some important phases and landmarks of a few past and future lives. In this way, God helps us to relive our past lives by being so compassionate and understanding. Alongside with the activation and glimpse of our previous lives, are also washed the pain, sorrow, separation from beloveds, remorse, grief and trauma of sad incidents and other life altering experiences. The remembrance of good memories and happy incidents give us hope and joy. A new wave of creative powers is inducted whereby one sees unexpected talents, gifts and special abilities in himself because of this shakti.

Subsequent to this, another portion of the smriti is opened up in due course after past lives’ regression. And that is the memory or smriti of God as Light that was experienced at our inception and forgotten for such a very long spell. The kind Guru gives us an experience of face to face with God represented as blazing Light. And in that radiating light are burnt all the possibilities of ever erring in future and an end to all our troubles and entrapment of directionless re-incarnations!!

God is perfect happiness

Once the smriti, the memory of oneness with Divinity is revived, we experience bliss of exceedingly sweet nature unknown so far to us. The nectar of bliss cannot be compared with anything of this fleeting world because of anshik or imperfect happiness in this imperfect world! And God is perfect happiness. And thus at last, comes to an end our long yatra or journey which had started off way back in time and space over millions of years. The tormented soul is liberated at last to bathe in bliss and peace!!

What is not Kundalini Shakti ?

  • It is not sexual energy. It should also not be used for sexual activities to empower oneself unethically. In fact it is procreation energy which helps us to evolve and advance faster in spiritual unfolding.
  • It is not a serpent. Serpent is only a comparison, a metaphor to understand the concept. God allowed only graphic interpretation so far hence we have so many types of illustrations of Goddess Shakti and yantra and chakras.
  • The serpent is not coiled. In fact the Sushumna nadi is coiled at the base because of deactivation. Sushumna and the other nerves at the head are in a cluster and look like a hood of a snake with its tail at the end of the spine. Hence it is said that the serpent is coiled three and a half times at the base.
  • Once the shakti is revived, the emergence of extra-ordinary abilities and skills are not possessed at random by the recipient. They are the abilities which we had acquired in our past lives and are stored in the memory and re-emerged as the electric currents passed through the brain. But further acquiring of more genius qualities is possible only with our  continuous efforts of today.

Conclusion

Two main purposes of activating Kundalini Shakti

  • to open sahasrar chakra
  • To arouse smriti

Tantra is a holy ancient science of revival powers. People mishandle and misapply it and use it in place of black magic, sorcery, voodoo, and other sciences of natural forces. Beware of those people who misguide you in the garb of religion, yoga or spirituality.

Sarva mangalam maangaleye Shive sarvarth sadhike I

Sharanye Trayambake Gauri Narayani namostute II

Meaning: O Mother! You are the personification of all that is auspicious. You are the benevolent form of Lord Shiva. You bestow Divine energy and help people achieve righteousness, wealth, fulfill desires and liberation. You are  worthy of being surrendered to. Three eyes adorn you O Devi! O Narayani Devi I pay obeisance to you!

(With this post are concluded the series of four topics on yogic diet, mind empowerment and dormant energies called Kundalini Shakti or coiled, dormant energies)

Importance of Badrinath Temple. It is a shakti sthala

Sri Badrinath temple, sometimes even called Badrinarayan temple, is situated along Alaknanda river and is nestled between two high mountains Nar and Narayan in the Himalayas. I have visited Sri Badrinath temple many times, the last time about six months ago. It is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and there are also other accompanying deities residing there. It is the only temple where the idol of Lord Vishnu is depicted in a sitting position in a meditative pose, the lotus posture. And those of you who have also had the privilege of seeing this temple must have noticed that the exterior structural design of this ancient temple, which is mentioned even in the ancient Vedas is of surprisingly Buddhist architecture. Its architecture, a brightly painted facade typical of Buddhists resembles a Buddhist vihara. Adi Shankaracharya, the great saint and philosopher of 8th century re-instated and re-installed the self manifested black granite stone idol of Lord Vishnu about 1,200 years ago. He recovered the idol  by diving in the waters of the fast flowing river Alaknanda. The idol was thrown in the water by some miscreants and Buddhist tantriks. Tantriks are perverts. They mislead people for their own interests. Adi Shankaracharya reorganized the whole system according to Vedic rites and systems after sanctifying the precinct. The present temple has also been renovated and re-constructed a number of times damaged by earthquakes, landslides and avalanches by the ruling kings after Adi Shankaracharya.

(My visit to Badrinath in 2005)

Badrinath temple is a shakti sthala, a powerful site. Scores of devotees visit this temple in the season, almost all of them come to ask for something and wish to satisfy their all possible desires. Many years back in the past, this powerfully spiritual and holy site was raided, despoiled and defiled by the Buddhist tantriks who looted it and converted it into a Buddhist monastery. The locals there have many stories to tell you how some nearby villages are now re-named after Chinese names today proving that indeed intrusion took place some years ago.

Misuse of Tantra Practices The Buddhist tantriks from Tibet infiltrated into India from across the border stealthily through the mountainous passes and forcefully took charge of the temple from the Hindu priests at that time. They did this horrific act so that they could become powerful and attain siddhis, supernatural powers by performing specific secretive practices in a dynamic spiritually powerful site. They also took away many ancient manuscripts with them. Since time immemorial, tantra powers have been misused by so many unscrupulous people.  They try to acquire these natural forces to satisfy personal desires and wants, satisfy lust and passions and also to fulfill similar desires of their disciples and followers. Such people do not understand the temporary nature of desire and that all desires and passions are passing and impermanent in nature, yet they claim themselves to be knowledgeable and become gurus.

About Tantra Yoga Tantra in Sanskrit means tantu or the smallest element. The other meaning of Tantra is taar or wire. It means transmission through mental connections. It is arousal of dormant feminine energies in a practitioner to enhance his or her yogic powers to reach upper most domains of astral world. Tantra Yoga was first practiced by Shiva and Parvati but to realize God in its benevolent form. Since then the holy science became derogatory with passage of time because man’s mind became corrupt. It is now become synonymous with arousing energies to gain momentary gains.

Electromagnetic waves or electricity travels in our body through very subtle carriers called nadis or nerve channels. The vital force or prana which is present in our body can be further acquired, disseminated and broadcasted through the transmitters or nerves from the ever present infinite Cosmic energy. The science of transmuting the Universal Force from the Cosmos for arousing the dormant energies in humans and expanding our present human consciousness to Cosmic Consciousness through the channels of transmitters or nadis is Tantra Yoga. It is an ancient science invented and developed by Lord Shiva, the Adi Guru in India in pre -Vedic times. In the holy scriptures of India, the pranic energy flowing within us is considered as feminine and depicted as Parvati or Mother Goddess and Shiva as Purush, Chetna or Cosmic Consciousness. So we have two types of forces within us -the feminine force which is gentle, moving yet soft and the other masculine which has more power and gravity. The feminine energy has creative powers while the masculine energy is robust and immutable.

There is a special chapter and mention of Kundalini Shakti in Tantra Yoga called Kundalini Yoga.  Adi Guru (first guru) Sadashiv Shankar Bhagwan or Lord Shiva through  conjugal love transferred his own creative primordial energies to awaken his beloved consort  Parvati and  merely to speed up and revive her divine nature and  give her atma darshan, or self realization. They both were recipients of divine bliss and Cosmic Consciousness. This is how Tantra Yoga originated in India to start with long, long time ago. When the pranic shakti, the life force is used for a very pious purpose and as a means to directly tap and connect to the one and only Universal Force, it serves a superior purpose. But in those days, man was pure and saatvik in nature, while today’s man is not as pure in mind and heart.  His mind is putrefied and forever restless because of so many desires breeding inside. People use the primordial energy located at the base for basal instincts and not just as a tool for swift transformation and enlightenment with the will of God.

Difference between Tantra Yoga and Raja Yoga

There is a difference of approach in Kundalini Yoga when compared to Raja Yoga. In Tantra Yoga vital energy from muladhar is promptly lifted straight to sahasrar chakra after practicing yoga for a considerable time, while in Rajayoga the energy is roused from agya chakra to sahasrar chakra. The unprincipled practitioners practice Kundalini Yoga and wish to take a shortcut without considering the fact that the purification of the lower chakras is yet to be done. All the forces in the nature are first to be invoked, worshiped and at the behest of God be used for a specific purpose keeping its sanctity and piousness intact. What we see around us today in the name of Yoga like Tantra Yoga, Kundalini Yoga is much afar from reality and its pious purposes.

Who should transmit and supply the power of awakening this dormant force?

The awakening and transmission of Kundalini Shakti should only be initiated by an expert and a proficient Guru who also possess a very strong character. He should be  generous, desireless and should transmit his own energies for the welfare of his disciples. It is only after the awakening of the Kundalini Shakti that the crown chakra, sahasrar chakra is tapped open and becomes functional for spiritual enlightenment.

The main purpose of awakening the primordial force called Kundalini Shakti in shastras is opening the crown chakra and the rest of the benefits come as by products.

Why is this force dormant? When Brahma (Spirit) becomes jeeeva (individual soul),  the divine force first enters the physical  body through an opening or aperture in the forehead at the midpoint between the two eyebrows called bhrikuti in Sanskrit or kutastha in yoga and spreads in all the parts of the body after that.

(Reference- How to increase the power of your will?)

That explains why this is the place of concentration and meditation. Some part of the remaining stream of this primal force accumulates at the navel for future course of action about which the human being is obviously not aware of. When the shakti is established, the soul is conscious of it as well as of his own identity with divinity and remembers it for quite a long time. This information of shakti instating in him is stored in the memory of humans called smriti.

Our mind is like a recorder, a CD which records everything. Smriti is memory, the faculty in the brain where all life experiences, feelings and perceptions are recorded.

There is a centre in the human brain where the images, feelings and memories of all past lives are recorded and stored. All the sensory perceptions, feelings, emotions are condensed, crystallized in memory. This becomes  man’s consciousness from which he operates. And thus starts the beginning of man’s long journey of evolution with incarnations and innumerable lives ahead of him.

As man creates countless new karmas and also reaps the fruit or consequences of his actions, with passage of time and lapse of memory, he slowly forgets his true nature of divinity from the mind by losing track. And as he bears the consequences of new  karmas, the tendencies or sanskaras or remnants of those karmas are imprinted in his or her mind. And man gets so involved in maya by becoming indulgent and falls by being a victim of vices like ego, jealousy, anger, hatred, selfishness, infidelity, lust, greed etc. Many wrongdoings or sins are produced in him because of which he moves far from truthfulness, honesty, sincerity, compassion, goodness, devotion, faith, kindness, satisfaction, love and other such great virtues.

The complete forgetting of God’s presence and light in oneself is called vismriti. It is forgetfulness, total forgetfulness.

Arousing from deep slumber or vismriti

After living many incarnations, during some life the man transforms and asks himself who is he? What should he be doing? Am I doing the right thing? With these thoughts he begins to change to become positive in attitude by repenting and he starts doing many types of sadhana , means of attaining by improving his sanskaras , imprints of tendencies of past karmas to purify himself. When he does tapas, penance with God’s mercy he finds a true omnipresent guru who shows him the right direction to self realization and after purifying him from the sludge of the unwanted karmic tendencies, the Guru prepares him for realizing who is he and what is God.

(Refer The process of liberation  & How does one know Atman? )

God realization is not easy as man is prone to slip and has an unpredictable nature. To avoid such a situation, the Guru while taking several precautions, hastens the whole process of complete transformation, makes use of that hidden, unknown and dormant power already buried right at the inception for so very long , lying unused at the lower region of the body called Kundalin Shakti. The same power is used as a dynamo to accelerate the transformation process in us by first  opening the crown chakra at the upper head which is the receiving station of divine rays and illumination. Once this is opened, the rest of the refinement of the soul goes on slowly and steadily with time.

And then for the sadhak, a stage is arrived on advancement little later on with God and Guru’s compassion, when the mind  never becomes deluded in Maya anymore, because the soul remembers God so convincingly, vehemently and consciously. It does so by repeatedly meditating on Him, remembering Him in all the ways that are possible.  By this time the soul does not ever forget at all that the real power in him and this world is of God. His ego dissolves completely in presence of Divine Light and purity. Therefore, he does not perform actions which are detrimental in nature and prefers to dive in divine bliss instead of fleeting pleasures of impermanent physical world. This is what is meant by Self Realization!

Many a times the devoted disciple is not even aware of the awakening of Kundalini Shakti in him while the compassionate Guru does his job silently. Ramakrishna Paramhansa of Dakshineshwar was in samadhi or continued  divine bliss for a long time being unaware of his own blissful state. It was later on when a female saint, a bhairavi, a tantra practitioner  announced to the troubling crowd there not to harass him as  he was not a mad man but a great yogi in ecstatic bliss!!

Conclusion and lesson for us

With only Guru’s will and grace, activation of sahasrar chakra by rousing Kundalini Shakti should be initiated and not by one’s own whim or fancy for supernatural powers or siddhis. Kundalini Shakti is a feminine energy, a soft and supple energy for some specific purposes for human development and spiritual enhancement. It should not be abused or misused for petty gains or for satisfying one’s passions or greed.

(P.S. Param Pujya means most respected and worshiped in Hindi)

Kundalini Shakti-I

The predicament

It was in 1998 I remember very explicitly that my serious search for God and answers for perplexing questions became a frenzied preoccupation when after spending more than fourteen years with a spiritual group, I still could not figure out how God was to be found. I would attend and listen to the lectures regularly, was consistent and would spend many hours in serious thoughts trying to transform myself into a better person. But during those fourteen years I could not get to make out even once how to ultimately find God within oneself. After I left that group, one fine day I instinctively went to Aurobindo Ashram of Delhi and sat by myself in the meditation hall quietly. I prayed very fervently to Divine Mother that day to please divulge which is the most exact method to know God and where should I set off from here. I must have sat there for a few minutes subsequently after which I left the hall and visited the adjoining book store. I looked around the place and picked up a small number of books to find an answer for my lingering and haunting question – What is the fastest, surest and fool proof method to realize God in this life?

And it was after reading a few books of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo, that I sifted and churned the essence of all the text that I read and discovered that the definite and surest way to find God within is by meditation. The revelation of the truth was further corroborated when in my sleep soon after, I had a vision of Sri Raman Maharishi of Tirruvannamalai who had a serene face with a gentle smile as though blessing me. On another occasion I got a darshan  or direct vision of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa of Dakshineshwar (West Bengal) who was meditating in a temple with an idol of a Goddess  with a red curtain behind her.  I was very intrigued with these extra sensory perceptions and wondered what is the meaning of the puzzling events in my life. What is the significance of these dreams, I thought to myself. Very soon, all the saints’ views converged when I became fully aware of the truth that without meditating one can never be acquainted with and know what is God, its nature and how to communicate with that one Universal Force.

That’s how I started the initial steps at home when I would concentrate trying to stop my frittering mind by practicing meditation. It was my first step alone in learning that art and skill without any outside support system whatsoever.  Although I must admit today that it was  not easy for me to sit motionless in one place at that time. But once I understood that this method is the confirmed, safest and the surest approach, I was ready to struggle hard to discipline my body and the ever wandering and agitating mentality. Unless the mind became very still, how can one ever perceive the peaceful nature of God?

One may wonder how I spent so many years in pursuit of something yet not get to the core.  Now fourteen years is a very long time in someone’s life to dedicate for a genuine cause and get nothing much in return.  But I have no qualms about it because now I know and can tell you for sure what not to do in the spiritual journey if you have decided to seriously mould your present life and not go off target in this life also!!

Role of a Self Realized Guru or Gurus

Please note, if a spiritual teacher does not tell you at the outset that God resides right there inside you and learn to meditate to immerse in divine joy and bliss which is the real  nature of God that clearly means that you have not yet met the omnipresent and universal spiritual teacher and Guide. Out of so many, it is just a handful Masters who can give you salvation through divine perceptions with their own power or shakti. They help us to overcome the load of past karmas of many lives by working out on themselves some of them and freeing us of the ill effects which we were supposed to reap sometime later. They tell us what is right and what is wrong for us  in order to reap only advantageous effects. They also advise us about  which specific actions and sadhana to perform in order for our soul to be liberated from fruits of past actions and to simultaneously create a bright future. We are helped and supported to exhaust the sanchit karmas which are the  accumulated karmas of many incarnations. They disclose to us the hidden mysteries of life and death, reincarnation, laws of karmas, knowledge of the working of Nature on micro and macro level, secrets of human evolution and the key to this whole web mire of Maya or delusion. That’s how a soul can escape the grip and trap of delusion and inescapable harmful effects in the form of unbearable mental and physical suffering!!! That’s salvation of the soul when one can be totally detached and not be affected by Maya and most of the time be in uninterrupted Ananda!!!

The dangers

While the rest of the so called gurus have only a few temporary supernatural powers called siddhis and they usually pull the wool over somebody’s eyes!

On behalf of the wish of His Holiness and revered Sri Mahavatar Babaji, I am now about to throw some light on Kundalini Shakti for all the readers and his devotees simply for the fact that the world is filled with inexpert and inept counselors and advisers. As the subject is sombre, we will go a bit slow and step by step to begin with this issue. The forthcoming articles are condensed in nature and self explanatory.

Aim of spiritual practices or sadhana and preparation for Self realization

The main aim of Hatha yoga, Kriya Yoga or Pranayam is to awaken the dormant divine power in humans termed as Kundalini Shakti. This store house of creative and regeneration power lying unused for centuries in the lower abdomen should not be stirred up or roused with one’s own craving or passions since ill effects may be produced thereafter and the person may not be able to control them. This happens because tendencies of ego are not erased entirely from the subconscious mind or chitta of that person. The heart and mind of the sadhak should be first purified by tapas, penance and intense sadhana as per the guidance and instructions of self-realized Gurus and  spiritual mentors. The safest way to stir up the inactive force is only through Guru’s wish and his Grace by Shakti Paat, transmitted through his/her sankalp or mere thought.

What is Shakti paat or tranmission of spiritual energies?

Shakti means force and paat means to fall. With only a mere ( sankalp) thought or will, the God realized guru can transmit his own divine power to rouse, open up the Kundalini Shakti where ever he or she is. It can also be transmitted with his touch  (sparsh)  with or without his presence and sight (drishti).  Shakti paat can be done with three ways-through Sankalpa, sparsh, and drishti. In other words an enlightened Guru is capable to transfer his or her energies in a few ways like thought, touch and sight. Out of all these, the transmission of energy through the medium of sankalp  or Guru’s will and thoughts is the safest way and the least trouble free. The guru chooses from his many disciples only those who are prepared and ready for enlightenment and liberation and whose last traces of residual shreds of ego accrued over many births called vasanas or egoism are remaining. And those who are not ready yet, either mentally or physically are not touched upon by the Guru because they will not be able to withstand the upheavals and uproar which may arise after shakti paat in the form of drastic life changes and situations, some very unfavourable and the others extremely favourable.

(Refer How to have lasting peace within our hearts-I)

The mind and the body, particularly the existing nervous system needs to be made fully prepared for further reorganizing and renewal of brain cells before and after the transmission. All along, the Guru plays a very significant role in this period of drastic transformation ensuring that the awakening of the storehouse is smooth and does not produce any complications specifically on the brain and the fragile nervous system.

First signs of awakening

The first signs of awakening of Kundalini Shakti in the recipient are -losing interest in non spiritual and worldly bustle and engagements, stability and clarity of mind, cultivation of intuition, clairvoyance, heightened creative abilities, reading other people’s minds, increase in sixth sense, less requirement of food and sleep, a sense of loss of body consciousness and experiencing extra sensory perceptions during deep meditation with the kind and compassionate Grace of Guru.

(After many years, I got an opportunity to visit Dakshineshwar when I shifted to Mumbai. In the temple of Kali Ma in Dakshineshwar, the view of the temple was identical to the vision I had years ago)

How to increase the power of your will?

#46

In India, prayer and spiritual chanting is done on a rosary of Rudraksha by many people and Rudraksha bead is believed to be the tear drop of Lord Shiva, the destroyer of sins. The dedicated ones believe that Rudraksha grants them boons as it has been used since time unknown in assisting the sadhus, yogis, monks, swamis and also householders in their spiritual uplifting and ascension. It is the devotee’s strong belief that the more ‘naam japa’ or repeated chanting we do on Rudraksha mala, the more our past sins get washed away. As for me, I believe it to be true as some trees are granted special powers by Nature and are divinely gifted to help mankind take leaps in their spiritual evolution. From time immemorial, the Rudraksha tree is held sacred by the believers especially by the devotees of Lord Shiva in India and this very special tree grows in the foothills of the Himalayan forests and other neighbouring Asian countries.

(Young Rudrakhsha tree with flowers and buds at someone’s home)

I can speak for its unique healing, therapeutic as well as peace giving abilities and qualities as I have had  the splendid opportunity of not just getting to see the Rudraksha tree in Haridwar, but I also had the good fortune of breathing under the shade of its foliage by sitting at the feet of this sacred tree. I remember feeling so fresh and alive as I sat for a while there. Even until today, whenever I revisit the site mentally, I get the same celestial feelings.

Just a few days back, on 10th Dec, after I rose from my morning meditation, I thought of relaxing for some time. So I went and sat on a settee which is placed just below the photo of my Param Guru, Shri Mahavatar Babaji and I shut my eyes. Many a times I come here to sit,  thinking to myself that I am sitting at the Holy feet of the great Master, the Immortal Guru, and the giver of Light to this world. In this way, I pay my homage and acknowledgement and thank Him in my heart for his constant Grace and spiritual assistance that I keep receiving in so many unvoiced ways practically everyday. As my eyes closed effortlessly, I was disconnected from the exterior environment as I entered into a short phase of transcendental meditation unpremeditatedly. I slipped into an unspoken and indescribable peace which lingered for only a few short moments, but nevertheless made me qualitatively so enriched that the next few days were full of ananda or joy, enthusiasm and sharpened creativity.

The joy and peace was  heightened and so soul enriching during the super conscious state that I broke into a spell of invocation as I implored to God and asked to grant me a wish -That I should neither lose the smriti or memory of God which has been kindled and re- awakened after such a long time in the form of illumination and elucidation in me, nor should it fade away in this life.  It should be etched indelibly in my consciousness. As I begged earnestly, the peace became more and more intensified and I further moved quietly into higher and higher realms of quietude or transcendental state. And then, all at once there was a complete silence within me as though the screen of my conscious mind was cleared and became vacant for something higher and bigger. I sat in that peerless state for a while  when I saw with my inner eye a well spread Rudraksha tree and a rosary of Rudrakh beads. The tree was the same one that I saw in Haridwar some years ago incidentally.

The tree drew a picture of being robust and healthy and the Rudraksha berries  swinging on the branches were very soft, supple and pristine in their appearance. I saw myself sitting under this tree in a meditative pose in scattering bright light. The benevolent tree’s kind gesture was cascading over me in the form of its profuse foliage and swaying branches. And as I meditated under the tree a little longer, unalloyed peace and joy began to instill in me which left me in raptures of unknown ecstasy!! And the more ecstatic I got, the more I wished to stay in that state of elation. I was gently melting away like a weightless bubble in a fathomless sea and yearned earnestly to remain dissolved in that sea till unheard eternity!!!

It was during these very fine moments that a one sided conversation took place between me and the tree. It was a one-sided conversation because I was a passive listener since my mind acknowledged everything and there was no reason for me to doubt or counteract. How can the mind chatter when such a deep connection is established with the centre of Light? I took great delight in observing my magnificent soul being unfolded peal after peal in presence of the ever-present Spirit manifested in the form of a Rudraksha tree and imparting me the sacred knowledge of spirituality. It spoke to me mainly in my language Hindi, which I shall translate in English for the convenience of others to understand. This is what I was told-

“Brahma or Spirit is thoughtless without a sankalp or a will of its own. While the individual soul or jeeva has its will or sankalp. When there is a wave of will in Brahma, it manifests itself as individual self or jeeva. The Cosmic Creation is born out of sankalp or will. So have a will to do good and very good karmas to rewrite your life. Those beings who are in a slumber lack the ability to will and do not exercise their right to will. There is enormous power in our will therefore use this power for performing good acts and fulfilling good purposes. God will be able to help you only when you initiate your will.

There are 3 types of actions or karmas:-

1) Undesirable actions or ashubh karmas

2) Meritorious actions or shubh karmas

3) Highly meritorious actions or ati shubh karmas.

When one performs meritorious or very meritorious actions, the past sins are washed away from the accumulated actions of many lives. The short cut to gateway of peace and heaven is through doing good and very good actions. Whenever a will to do harmful and detrimental karmas is aroused in you, immediately erase that will and in its place develop and substitute a strong will to do either good or very good actions. The tree further blessed me and everyone else copiously by saying that there is an original and causal power concealed in the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’. If one chants this mantra reverentially as well as faithfully, he will soon find his path of salvation. Those who wish to have a Guru, will find a guru. If the person decides to meditate, sooner or later he will surely find his steps and methods of sadhana including specific meditation techniques. And if someone wishes to increase his power of will, or ichcha shakti he will achieve that too. Who so ever reads this write-up with belief and adoration will benefit in some or the other way. So in this way everyone will receive something or the other if he has faith and belief in all-pervading Spirit residing in us.

However, those people who have hidden desires of greed and materialistic selfish goals will be disappointed because even though people follow different religions or paths, they must realize that the real purpose of rudraksha mala, or any rosary, crystals, beads or semi precious gems and stones is not for money or acquisitive purposes. They are meant merely as tools for empowering and assisting us in our activities of promoting and advancing spiritual efforts to make the path easier and smoother for Self realization”.

So what is will? Will is the initiative power existing in us. The power to initiate, to start, to pursue and sustain and to accomplish something is called sankalp or will. Without the presence of will, we will not live well enough and will become lifeless, inert, lazy or ill defined in our direction. People who lack the power of will, do not perform well in carrying out their responsibilities and given roles. Our will is the deciding factor in humans which decides whether we wish to continue living or not.

The best example in sight is of Bhishma Pitamaha in Mahabaharat who saw many generations and died only when he had the will to relinquish his body at long last. It is for the same explanation that a person does not become alright again when he is ailing because he wishes to live no further. And then there are small children and other individuals who are found alive under the debris but still manage to pull through after earthquake simply for the reason that they had a very strong will to live and so they survived the disaster.

If the humans did not have a strong will nestling in them, this planet would not have witnessed resurrection of spirit, revival, reinvention, reconstruction and creativity in every possible form in spite of so much destruction, zonal wars, drastic climatic changes and natural calamities. The same will in man is resorted to when he decides to resurrect his lost divinity and glory.

In practical life what should we do to increase this power of will existing in all of us? A few points are being mentioned below for the sake of the spiritual aspirants and others too.

1. Learn to listen more to people. They teach us a lot. Save energy. People around us keep us busy the whole day by talking to us needlessly. If you do not disconnect your mind and speech from them, you will receive their thoughts which will occupy and fill up your mental space. Their conversations mostly involves outmoded, repetitive or immature talk. Sometimes their mood is irritated or they are not at ease and they pass on their feelings to you.  So just listen, be a passive listener. When we associate a lot with all types of people in a day, there is a possibility of absorbing their mediocre qualities or even demerits to say.

Listen more, think more. Talk less, eat less. If you eat less, you will talk less.If you talk less, you will listen more.

2. Do not think negative thoughts. Believe in yourself completely. Whenever your mind thinks of impossibilities, tell yourself by affirming sincerely that it is very much possible for you to accomplish that task because you have the inborn power and the will of God with you. Positive thoughts give power to mind, body as well as the soul. Refrain from people who are pessimistic in their thoughts, attitude and outlook.

3. Choose the right things. Stop meandering. In most situations we have a choice so learn to listen to that voice which tells you what to do at that moment in time. At the start it may look easier said than done and you may be confused and unsure of yourself but with the kind blessings of the guiding Masters, the path will be cleared and clarity of mind will develop. Before long you agree that though the tasks looked daunting and challenging or even impossible before you set off, the decision that you took was correct. So do not be afraid of new life situations and undertake new ventures from time to time.

4. Attempt and perform extra ordinary deeds Think of those things which your subconscious mind denies you by making you believe imperfectly that you are  not in the capacity to perform independently that particular activity, venture or enterprise. Do not listen to that shaky voice which disregards your inherent powers of all powerful Spirit. And once you accomplish that goal, your mind will become braver and stronger and the will power is going to be infused and heightened. What is the difference between Edmund Hillary who was one of the first known man to conquer the highest peak of Mt. Everest and an ordinary man? It is their will power. If you will something stoutly, you will accomplish it without any doubt. Therefore, stretch your limits to the point where you are totally involved with a new intimidating and overwhelming project after every few weeks or months and years!!  Do not become complacent and satisfied.

5. Take proper, healthy nourishment and diet. Have nerves of steel but to have them you need to build them!. The nerves of the sadhak or an achiever cannot be made of less or inferior quality of building material because the sadhak pursues goals which are profound and unfathomable by layman. Our mind is a powerhouse and tremendous energy flows out from the brain in the act of willing to do something special or extraordinary. So eat those foods which will not only give nourishment to the frayed nerves but will also give strength and nourishment to them in rich supply. Some ayurvedic herbs like Shankhpushpi, Aswagandha, Brahmi are memory enhancers and rich in nutrients for regeneration and rejuvenation. Have regular supplies of good quality plant proteins, dairy products, walnuts, almonds, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins found lavishly in vegetables, dry fruits and fresh fruits without skipping if you are storming your mind with robust will and simultaneously executing those ideals. Stress on quality rather than quantity of food.

Apart from solid foods, energy through the channel of respiration can also be supplied to our whole system which gives tremendous amount of oxygen supply to the brain. (Refer Food and breath control)

6. Learn meditation. Learn and practice some kind of meditation technique to refresh, rejuvenate and consolidate the mind. A mind that meditates everyday has incredible amount of pranic force or  life force and spiritual energies. The mind gets a great amount of rest and relaxation if we meditate daily.

Energy in us which is saved by many ways is stored in the cells of the brain. So much of our energy is spent throughout the day through the five senses, specially senses of the mouth and the eyes. Speaking less contributes to a good amount of surplus energy. Over a period of time, a significant amount of energy is saved in this way and accumulated in the nervous system.  And once after arousing the dormant primordial energy commonly referred to as Kundalini Shakti in India, all the stored energy in the brain and the area near the navel is utilized for breaking the ages long, deep, slumber of ignorance or avidya to stir up and awaken the Spirit in man!!

Awakening of lost Divinity asks for a lot of determination, and self effort and it begins with the person’s own will. One must have a very strong urge and indomitable will to regain the kingdom of God and lost divinity through the secret and sacred knowledge of the Supreme.

Unless you will it, you cannot achieve it!

Updating-02-02-2019, 12.30 pm

I published this post on 15-12-2009.I have explained this post in Pondicherry on 16-01-2019 at length. Since I returned from Pondicherry after concluding my discourse (13th to 19th January, 2019) I was intrigued by one thought. I wished to know the Spirit of this Rudraksh tree which came to me many years ago and enlightened me. I was convinced that it must be a very pious Spirit since I know that all trees have a Spirit, this knowledge heightened my curiosity.

In my meditation some time back Agastya Maharishi expounded elaborately on ichcha shakti or the power of our will and told me that it was Him who came to me in disguise as a Rudraaksha tree in my meditation because he is an ardent Shiva Bhakt and wished to come as a Rudraksh tree to explain to me secreted facts such as this-

I was not surprised because these important lines about Brahma could have come only from him. I was wondering and thinking since a long time who could it be? It must be a renowned and well established in Spirit enlightened person and to my most wonderful awakening, I found Agastya Maharishi in my meditation today. I have now found him so close to me since he has already been quietly guiding me since a long time ….My most humblest prostration to Him from my heart…..

(Agastya Maharishi)

Updated on 26-02-19. On 17.1.19 we visited Parangipettai in a group.  It is the birthplace of Shri Mahavatar Babaji. It is today protected by Agastya Maharishi. Spontaneously, I decided to grow three Rudraksha trees in the holy precinct when I went there after five years.

With God’s grace it became a reality and on 24-02-19 3 saplings of Rudraksha trees were planted. A post has been dedicated on Fb on 25-02-2019 of the same. They were in honour and gratitude to the three Gurus of Shri Mahavatar Babaji- Agastya, Bogar and Karthik.

We are going to discuss yogic diet for those people who want to lead a life of a yogi, the one whose mind is engaged with God. First of all, give up smoking and drinking because no mater how good the food is, alcohol and tobacco are going to bring down the quality of food and harm your system. Instead of drinking alcohol, do physical exercise which will digest the food, de-stress you and improve the overall health of the body and mind.

  • Abstain from pork and beef preparations. They will make the mind slow in intelligence and agility.
  • Food should be eaten consciously and not absentmindedly. Eating slowly and relishing every bite helps in digestion and assimilation.
  • Reduce sugar, oil and salt intake to healthy proportions.
  • For proteins, eat plant proteins instead of animal proteins and consume dairy products for Saativik or spiritual thoughts and mentality.
  • Water, fibre, some raw food items like fruits, salad is essential in everyday food to aid digestion and elimination.
  • Avoid artificial sweetening, colours, scents and flavouring as much as possible. And also food with preservatives should be avoided as far as possible. Instead consume foods in natural form and taste.
  • Reduce and avoid eating sticky foods, particularly maida or baking flour and deep fried foods.
  • Eat seasonal, locally grown foods according to age, activity, gender and temperament.
  • Avoid situations of worries, stress and tension. For relaxation of mind and  muscles, take massage therapy, do meditation of some kind, sing chants or devotional music and pursue other hobbies of your choice. Go for long walks for unwinding as well as de-stressing.
  • Include all the parts of the plant in your food-starting from fruits, flowers, stems, leaves, roots and even seeds. All the parts of a plant should be incorporated in our food and diet.
  • The food should be soft containing enough water content and palatable in taste.
  • It should not emit smell that displeases our senses. The aroma of food should be appetizing and pleasing.
  • Avoid very sour, very sweet, very hot, spicy and pungent foods.
  • Consume natural sugar available in fresh fruits, vegetables and dry fruits.
  • Eat foods of all colours like red, green, purple, yellow etc Eg.  tomatoes, spinach, brinjal, corn, papaya, watermelon, bananas, grapes etc.
  • Food should have nutrition for all the chakras or centres starting from mool aadhar chakra or root center to sahasrar chakra or crown chakra. Partake food and nutrition for physical, mental and spiritual activities. Our diet should be a complete package of food for relaxation, rejuvenation and restoration.
  • Add micro nutrients and supplements as daily intake. The advanced yogis eat  food which not only restores and preserves health but also for inducing anti- aging processes of mental and physical body. All the foods that have antioxidants are anti ageing.

This reminds me that when I went for a pilgrimage in the Himalayas in the summer for Char Dham yatra, I had decided to trek throughout the whole trip instead of hiring a pony or take a helicopter. But the food that was supplied by the organizers was inappropriate and badly planned. Just before we were to start our long trek, we should have been given good quality proteins and carbohydrates instead of giving fried food items. The supposedly tasty fried food did not serve my purpose as I could not walk up on foot all the way up as a lot of energy was being spent on digesting the fried food. I trekked quite a bit but I could have trekked on all the routes provided the diet was right. Therefore, our diet should be right and we must have knowledge of food science and must be aware of what we eat and why we should  eat a particular diet.

Breath control

Refer Bhagwat Geeta Chapter 4,  verses 29/30

Apane juhivti pranam praneapanam tathapare I

Pranaapangati ruddhwa pranayamparayanaah II

Apare niyatahaarah prananpraneshu juhavati I

Sarvepyete yagyavido yagyakshapitkalmashi II

Translation-Other yogis offer the act of exhalation into that of inhalation, even so other, the act of inhalation into that of exhalation. There are still others given to practice of Pranayam (breath control), who having regulated their diet and controlled the process of exhalation and inhalation both pour their vital airs themselves. All these have their sins consumed away by sacrifice and understand the meanings of sacrificial worship.

This shloka is about performing sacrifices or yagyas with many things, one of them sacrificing the prana and indicates observing the incoming and outgoing breath through the scientific techniques developed by sages for regulating breathing.

Pranayam

The word Pranayam is comprised of two Sanskrit words ‘prana’ plus ‘ayama’.

Prana means life force, ayamam means extension or expansion. In totality, it means extending one’s life by extending the length of breath by breathing systematically by applying some breathing techniques for various aspects of respiration and mastering inhalation and exhalation.

Pranayam utilises breathing to influence and increase the flow of prana or life force in the nadis or energy routes/channels of the energy body called pranamaya kosha, the life force sheath or body of a human being.

The various techniques of Pranayam are the methods whereby the life force can be first activated and then regulated and expanded in order to go beyond one’s normal limitation and reach a higher state of awareness and vibratory energies.

Prana is the force which exists in all animate and inanimate things. Pranayam is generally defined as breath control but it does not convey the full meaning. Therefore, it should not be understood or considered as mere breathing exercises aimed at supplying extra oxygen into the lungs.

Steps of Pranayama

There are four aspects or steps of Pranayama–

  1. Inhalation or pooraka
  2. Exhalation or rechaka
  3. Internal breath retention or Antar Kumbhak (Kumbhak means pot)
  4. External breath retention or Bahir Kumbhak

The different practices of Pranayam consists various techniques which involve the above stated aspects of breathing.

However, at the higher stage of Pranayam  which occurs during advanced stages of meditation, there is another mode of Pranayam which is called ‘Kevala Kumbhak’ or spontaneous breath retention. During this higher state, the fluctuation of prana ceases and breathing stops for some moments and simultaneously high level of awareness and complete oneness with Reality is attained. Body consciousness drops for those exclusive moments. There is complete stillness of mind and the life force used for breathing suspends. It is the precursor and beginning of experiencing Cosmic Consciousness.

In fact, one must know that the most important part of Pranayam is actually Khumbhak or breath retention. But this  should not be done forcibly as it comes with gradual development of breath control and respiration. In order to strengthen the lung capacity, nervous and pranic systems, more emphasis should be given on inhalation and exhalation in the beginning. Gradually at one particular stage, with Guru’s Grace and benevolence, the Kevala Kumbhak or the stage of oneness with the Infinite is attained

Pachkosha, five sheaths Furthermore, the  human body comprises of five sheaths, bodies or koshas, beginning from gross to more subtle, which account for different aspects and functions of human existence  and they are known as-

  1. Annamaya kosha– the food or material body
  2. Manomaya kosha- the mental body
  3. Pranamaya kosha- Bioplasmic or vital energy
  4. Vijnanamaya– The psychic or higher mental
  5. Anandmaya Kosha– the transcendental or bliss body

Although all five sheaths function together to form an integral whole, the practice of Pranayam deals mainly with pranamaya kosh.

Correlation between breath and our health

Most people breathe incorrectly using only a small part of their lung capacity, thereby depriving the body of oxygen and prana so essential for all the vital processes and activities of every cell. Prana is also extremely vital for the performance of our brain functioning.

Pranayam corrects our posture to start with, introduces correct breathing habits, strengthens the muscles of the back and pulmonary cavity.

It also establishes a regular breathing pattern, breaking the irregular breathing habits. Rhythmic, slow and deep breathing calms the mind and also endows longevity in humans because respiration is directly related to the heart. A slow, rhythmic rate makes the heart stronger and better nourished and healthier. Deep regular breathing increases the absorption of life force in Pranayam resulting in vigour and vitality and well being of the practitioner.

Pranayam removes the blockages in the various nadis, the energy channels of life force thereby enabling increased absorption and retention of prana. As the sadhak or spiritual practitioner requires a calm state of mind the Pranayam techniques are very useful in this endeavour.

Once the mind is stilled, the gateway to higher Cosmic Consciousness opens leading the seeker to higher states of awareness and evolution.

Some types of Pranayams are:- Nadi Shodhana Pranayam, Bhastrika Pranayam, Kapalabati. A teacher’s guidance is essentially for its practice.

How to increase your capacity to do work?

#44

A visit to Pondicherry in the last week of October 2009 by me was highly beneficial. Apart from getting the opportunity of meditating in a place which is a spiritual dynamo, I was also able to write the next series of 4 articles titled ‘How to….?’ series. These articles are on enhancing one’s mind powers, yogic diet, saatvik or pure life style,as well as explanation of the mystery of Kundalini shakti, the dormant spiritual powers and  thereby demystifying the clouds of obscurity around it.

The Mother and Sri Aurobindo of Pondicherry

I consider myself extremely fortunate because I have been blessed in so many ways by The Mother and Sri Aurobindo in speeding up my sadhana and opening up new vistas of higher knowing very silently since I made my first trip to Pondicherry in November 2002. It was serendipity at its best since I had no clue why I was going  there except that I definitely held a desire many years ago to visit this place but it had never materialized. By the year 2002, Mother knew that my time had come and a set of serendipitous events occurred which literally transported me to Pondicherry. During that time I did not even know what to expect or do there as I had no guide or adviser. However, once I began going there frequently, I have never looked back as it has been a time for great progress  ever since I accepted Mother as my Holy Mother, who in turn has been nurturing and caring for me silently with Her unfathomable energy or Shakti. She replenishes and infuses me repeatedly because of which I have never ending energy to work, think, meditate and pursue a very active and strenuous life. With passage of time, my food and sleep requirement is visibly decreasing and the output is increasing. My capacity to work has increased manifold . I surprise myself when I look at the changes that are developing as I go on breaking my limitations and increase my previous limited potential. A lot has got to do with my frame of mind that has undergone drastic transformation in the last few years. The self-doubts, fears, anxieties and abiding nebulous concepts have vanished and they have been replaced by unshakable and irrevocable faith in God and my spiritual mentors who have taught me to believe in myself completely. Whatever I wish to do now I am able to do because I can perform so many types of activities and I accomplish a great deal in a day. It is Divine Mother’s wish that I share this information with all with the purpose of yielding spiritual augmentation and intensification for all sincere aspirants. She is not just my mother, she is your mother too. Whenever you are in a need of any protection or spiritual guidance, call on her. You will without fail receive her blessings in many oblique ways and manner. One can address her as just ‘Mother’ or ‘Ma’ to call her and she will respond to your desires, needs and spiritual aspirations.

Human life is mainly about survival and upkeep of this body. So apart from maintaining ourselves, we need to accomplish more in less time in a day in order to save time and energy to be able to perform suitable actions to acquire awareness and self realizations. In other words, to evolve faster and speed up the upward journey of self realization, we must follow a specific life style. I sincerely hope that the following 4 articles* will be of considerable help for all of us keeping in view the intention which The Mother has in her mind. The first article will discuss some points about how we can increase our capacity to work. The second article will  is going to deal with food and nutrition and breath- control. They are important topics as they are to be applied and adopted in our daily life. The next will throw some light on ‘How to make your mind strong by the power of will’. The last one is on arousing the dormant primitive energy lying unused since ancient times in our body about which we are absolutely unaware. This particular post will be an important landmark on my blog because only when that Primordial Energy or Kundalini Shakti is aroused and unleashed systematically that one can have a direct vision of Divine Light. If we, the aspirants are informed about this unknown storehouse of energy, we can utilize it in right and proper manner so as to get optimum profit and correct utilization.

After all what is energy? In its simplest, energy is the capacity for doing work which is the best reason for us to save it!

I shall be extremely happy and thankful to God if I am able to touch your life in some way on your road to spiritual progress. In this way I will be able to serve God in a very small way!! So let’s begin-

First of all:-

Know your value Know and respect yourself. Realize and know that God’s energy flows through you and allow the energy to do the work. The Divine has ideas, projects and work for all of us provided we can attune our minds with the will of God. Till that materializes, patience and peace should be maintained. Live each day to practice living by the will of God!
Be egoless Inculcate a sense of non-doership. If you say and believe that you are the doer and initiator of any germ of any idea, thought, creativity or action that is not so. Whenever the will of God flows through you an action, a task or work is initiated and completed. Without the will of God, we are never able to accomplish anything substantial as we need the forces in nature do the work for us. All the forces in this Universe are in control and in command of that Almighty. So to please the forces, we have to please God first, the eternal all powerful Force that exists inside us. So surrender to God!
Be quiet Silence restores our energies and gives us time for God communion. Spend some time everyday in silence in the morning after you wake up and before you go to sleep. The racing and hectic activities should be slowed down and stopped before retiring at night. Talking about irrelevant and worthless things is futile. Save energy to work more. In between two tasks, silence your mind by instilling calmness and tranquility, it is very important. Take some mental rest in between the umpteen tasks of the day. Restore your energies constantly!
Keep a fixed routine Keep the day very meticulously planned to save energy and time and keep a fixed routine of your activities on a daily basis. An unplanned and badly managed day can turn out to be unproductive and frustrating. One can achieve a lot in a day, if we plan the day either before sleeping or before the real action starts in the morning.
Enjoy every activity, every action, every duty that you perform Add enthusiasm, excitement, passion and a lot of interest in whatever you intend to do during the whole day. Stay interested in life like a small child so full of curiosity and keenness.
“Its faith in something and enthusiasm for something that makes a life worth living”
A demotivated and indifferent man can never be productive, so stay alive and charged mentally and physically by being interested in life.
Visualize creatively Be creative and imaginative. Visualization and imagination are the powers gifted to only humans. Imagination has innate creative powers. To accomplish anything admirable, we must first of all have very fertile and powerful imagination. The power of imagination is developed by putting it in regular use. The more you use it, the better it gets. In childhood, we were not encouraged to dream, fantasize and the sprouts of creativity and imagination were destroyed. It is essential to empower ourselves by the germ or seed of imagination which will manifest as creativity of some sort in future. The manifestation of great ideas, plans and thoughts must be born and planted in the crucible of our minds first.
Gratitude and thanks giving to God Remember God for all the things that have been bestowed on us as His Grace. Being kind and humble to people is a way of thanksgiving to God. Faith, mercy, thanks- giving  purify our heart and mind and attune us with the source of the Highest Power. And in this way, we are able to perform our duties and responsibilities with continuous flow of power and energy.
Meditate regularly Pray and meditate. It is during this time that we are in direct touch with sublime energies and get charged with potent powerful vibrations from higher sources. During meditation, the body comes to complete relaxation when our mind is withdrawn from the senses. Even when we do no work, a considerable amount of energy is spent by the senses during wakeful hours. So when we sit to meditate, the eyes are closed and the attention or focus is withdrawn from the sensory world thereby saving sufficient amount of energy. The saved energy is then used by yogis to contemplate and meditate. And those of us who are yet to initiate themselves in meditation, even sitting still  in a comfortable place and shutting the eyes for 10 minutes and enjoying the prevailing peace twice a day will yield great  profit to you. So why don’t you try it, please?
 (To be continued)

How to make your life extra-ordinary from ordinary?

#43

Swami Dayananda Shaligram of Ganeshpuri

It is 2.20 a.m of 12th Oct, 2009. Last night, I completed my previous article after revising and editing it on how to make our mind firm and steady. I had to conclude the article so that I could go and spend some time in Pondicherry in meditation and reflection for reviewing my growth and come to a decision where to set off from there. And by the time I would return, the next article should be ready before 30th to make an entry of this month. I was contemplating upon all this and well, also on what I should write next. I kept in mind Swami Dayananda Shaligram of Ganeshpuri, whose nature is omnipresent and who is my constant spiritual companion, to assist and guide me in this serious effort and continuing endeavour of mine. I also thought in the direction of this- That the next post should be related to practical life skills and it should not be very introspective in nature and full of gravity for the time being, at least. Thinking hard of all this, I fell asleep last night. These days my mind is most of the time engrossed in pondering, in keeping up with and updating  my blog and thereafter in practicing what I write for all of us.

My eyes opened at 2.20 a.m. sharp and I came to a wakeful state and found myself speaking these words clearly- ‘How to make your life extra-ordinary from ordinary’. I was bewildered and amazed to see what I was muttering to myself and wondered why. The next moment I became fully aware that I just got over with seeing a vivid, meaningful dream. Or rather I was being told telepathically through the medium of a dream, in which I was guided by Swami Shaligram what to write in my blog and that was what I had just uttered. And then, it took me a few moments to walk in the past and recall what was the last thing that I thought about before I slept as this incident must be a continuation of that deliberation. I had become fully awake by this time and decided that once I get up at 6 in the morning I will bring together and compile what I had experienced. However, revered Shaligram Swami did not allow me to sleep, instead he told me to start penning down what he was about to make me write right there and then!! He clarified that this article is for my daughter, Mandira who is blooming beautifully in every manner but needs some special guidance at the moment. So I heeded his well timed advice and obeyed him and took out my pen and register in the dark and then got up to put on the light. I sat up and opened a fresh page. The flow of words and sentences trickled and flowed on its own, effortlessly from 2.20 to 4 a.m. in the morning as I allowed his thoughts of practical wisdom and judicious advice flow through me. I did not tire neither did he, until this post was composed in one go. When I was over and done with it, I saw the time. It was exactly 4 a.m in the morning and before I left for Pondicherry, the draft of this particular entry which you are reading at this moment was ready. I was thankful and relieved at the unexpected turn of events of that morning.

After a little while, at 4.20 am when I saw the time, I remembered that it is this time at Ganeshpuri when the first kaakad ( very early morning) aarti is sung at the temple in honour of Swami Sri Nityananda, Swami Shaligram’s guru (To know more about Swami Nitynanda of Ganeshpuri, read article- Ignite the flame of illumination -I) Believing myself to be there in the hall before sunrise at wee hours and invoking Him silently and harbouring a wish in my heart that this article should benefit in abundance and do good to many, many people and readers so that their lives with the grace of Swami Nityananda and Swami Dayananda Shaligram should also become extra-ordinary. To fulfil this wish of mine, I began chanting this Holy name- Hare Nityananda, Paavan Nityananda, Hare Nityananda Paavan Nityananda ……

 This means:-

{Hare  (Ishwar, Lord)  Nityananda ( Nitya means always ananda means bliss},   Paavan  (Pure)  Nityananda

Swami Shaligram composed this mantra when he was alive for his Param Guru Swami Nityananda and it was seen by people then that He would be immersed in this mantra chanting for hours and would be totally lost in Divine union during that time. Mantras have prolific impact on our mind, body and soul. They can lead us first from concentration to meditation and then to God union. Try and see for yourself,  mantras have their own latent powers hidden inside them (Read What is renunciation?-II to know more about his life, nature and teachings)

For your  sake, I would like to inform you that Swami Shaligram, Swami Nityananda’s recluse, yet foremost disciple who shunned public gaze, set an example for all the devotees when he was alive by dedicating his life by setting an example of an ideal disciple to his guru, Swami Nityananda. He was an epitome of devotion, surrender and self- giving. He took birth with only one mission- helping the poor and needy people and to show the sadhaks or aspiring seekers what an ideal disciple should be like. He was  like what Arjun was to Lord Krishna, a perfect disciple. No wonder Mahavatar Babaji has said these words about Swami Shaligram- “Voh mera laadla beta hai”.  He is my very dear son!

So dear readers, this article has come as a gift for all of us just before the festival of Diwali, the festival of lights and a season of celebration. May the light of the lamps of this festival light up your minds and cheer your hearts. May your life glitter with sparklers of joy and enlightenment !! With these bright and enriching thoughts, let me now proceed to reveal and talk about what Holy Swami Shaligram has told us in order to make our lives extra ordinary in  many ways. He said-

Believe in your destiny Don’t doubt your destiny which is a very big force which we carry in an embryonic state within us. Whatever we are supposed to have or get in life in future, we will definitely get and acquire in a fixed course of time. So why lose hope and have doubts in our power, abilities, or capacity to do something? Instead put all your energy and focus on achieving what you desire for.

Now why do all genuine saints ask us to believe in our destiny, one may ask or at least the atheists may ask me.

Confidence in your destiny gives you sense of satisfaction and contentment or else feelings of discontentment, jealousy and hopelessness are nursed. If you have a firm belief that whatever life has pre-decided to bestow on me, I will surely get one day, no one can take that away from me, you will have no fears or concerns and will never be overwhelmed by mental worries and anxiety. On the contrary we are sure to stay calm and we will move towards our set goals. Lord Krishna was destined to become the king of Mathura, no matter how many attempts were made by  Kansa to kill Him but he was unsuccessful in his wicked attempts.

When your time comes to get bestowed what is due to you, circumstances automatically become favourable. Try to see at present whether the forces are against you or in your favour. If they are unfavourable, try harder, intensify your efforts leave no stone unturned, you will achieve your goals. Knock every door until the opportunity arrives and knocks your door. And even if after trying nothing works then-

Have patience Cultivate patience, not little but a lot of it. Extra ordinary people are blessed with this great quality. Believe in yourself that you will be able to achieve what you have set your goals for but that will take time. Until that manifests, you must put up with every effort and that too very consistently. We tend to forget that when we do not achieve results after making many attempts at something , only patience helps.

In normal circumstances, what we do is try to do a bit of something then lose hope and eventually give up. For some results we have to work harder as it takes longer than normal to get desired results. So be it!! Achieve your aims and goals with untiring patience .

Lord Rama never gave up and had unending patience when he set out to find his abducted wife, his beloved consort, Seeta. He searched for her everywhere in the forest and in plains. And being the king of Ayodhya, he did not hesitate to ask for help from anyone whether they were animate or inanimate, high or low, rich or poor, known or unknown. He worshiped the sands of seashore of Indian Ocean and also to Lord Shiva after the battle in Lanka until he achieved what he had set for!!

Be persistent Whenever I think of persistence, I think of ants. Ants never give up and they carry such big loads on their head and to me they never seem to be getting tired of doing the same job all their lives. When they walk up, they fall umpteen times. They never say that it’s not possible to reach my destination because I keep falling. Instead, they create their own path and walk on it. You try stopping an ant who is carrying a grain of sugar up the hill you will understand what I am saying. It will never stop and instead it moves in another direction and keeps moving up. If there are people who are blocking your path, don’t complain, cry or sulk, just carve out a new path and walk in a new direction. Carve out your  new destiny by being very persistent in your efforts. Persistence really pays. No matter how long it takes to get  results, months or years, put in your efforts on a regular basis until you get what you want in life, it could be physical, material or spiritual in nature. To make our lives better and progressive material gains are also needed.

Be determined By being determined, we remain focused in our endeavours. If you are determined, you will become fearless. Determined people are afraid of nothing, not even death. They face everything that comes in front of them, they address it and move on. There are going to be problems in between, there will be short periods of darkness, you may sometimes feel hopeless but it does not  matter. Be determined and rise once more and do not rest until you have achieved what you had set out for. There are many people out there who have set up their big business houses, companies, ventures and other establishments who had no help whatsoever but they were determined to pursue to follow and chase their dreams and goals. Great athletes and sportsmen, mountaineers, climbers, freedom fighters are also people with extra ordinary determination and therefore achieve extra ordinary feats.

Control your mind and speech People who have regulated speech can control their mind easily. Our speech should be full of meaning and worth. Senseless words, senseless talking and senseless thinking depletes our energy and stops us from exploring our optimum potential. Learn to conserve energy by talking less and thinking more. A lot of energy is wasted in worthless conversation for the heck of it. Limited talking will give us more time to contemplate and meditate.

A scattered and restless mind can never achieve anything big and extra-ordinary. Try to meditate to make the mind calm, strong, powerful and dynamic to achieve whatever you want to achieve and pursue an enriching, enhanced and superior life. To extrapolate and break all limitations of mind and body, be conservative in talking and do not spend your precious energy in fruitless interactions with people.

Save time for yourself to nurture, conserve and mould your life in extraordinary ways.

People who speak less and meaningfully have the power to have an impact and can change other people’s life in many areas. So control your mind and control your speech. They both are interrelated.

Be courageous  If you look at the life of Panchali, she was one woman who was very courageous. She did not fear anything and always spoke the truth without any hesitation. She was bold enough to tell Bhishmapitamaha, the senior most member and head of the entire lineage, that he had no business to be called Pitamaha and the caretaker of Hastinapur if he did not have the courage to stop the Kauravas from insulting and disrobing her in public. She had the courage to go bemoaning to Dhritrashtraand tell him that as he had kept mum during such an ill-omened hour, ominous fate would fall on the next generations of Kauravas. She feared nobody in the huge hall where there were only men and no woman to be at her side at such a critical time.

She also decided to be on the battle field for those 18 long days at Kurukshetra till the war was over to make sure no Kaurava survives the wrath that they had called upon themselves by their own misdeeds. In the camp, she would nurse the soldiers and falling kings to the ground. She saw the gory of death and destruction and waited for Pandavas to bring the war  to an end.

After the war, like Pandavas, she too relinquished Hastinapur and chose the cold and arduous Himalayas to bring the chapter of her life to a close. All along, she chose to be with the Pandavas uptil Swarag Rohini peak, near Alaknanda river in the mighty Himalayas, next to today’s Badrinath temple where one by one, the Pandavas laid down their lives willingly as repentance and penance for the war they had fought so unwillingly!!  History pays tribute to that bold and courageous woman even today.

Women can achieve and accomplish anything and make their lives extra ordinary if they want to, provided they possess or cultivate  boldness, courage, forthrightness and fortitude. So cultivate that and fear nothing in life.

Judge your life by its quality It is in our nature to judge ourselves by comparing ourselves with someone else who has become something or seems to have achieved much more than us in terms of success and material gains.

But my dear child, I do not view and judge myself on this criteria. This is not the bench mark for me to judge people. I agree that there are many people whom I know are much more successful and are wealthier than I am in terms of career, success and wealth. Good for them!! I am not missing out on anything, I am very positive about it. On the contrary, I consider myself to be more fortunate than all others because I am able to connect to God anytime I wish to, I have my own contacts and connections! Do they have that?

I have peace in my life. Do they have peace of mind?

I have joy in my life. Do those people have joy in their life or are they in delusion and misery of some kind?

I have contentment and satisfaction. Do the very rich and visibly famous have contentment or do they crave for more?

I have unshakable faith in God. Faith that has helped me to navigate in the darkest hours of my life. Do you have sufficient faith and believe in God and his mercy and Grace?

And if yes, then you are a blessed one and a chosen one!!

Judge yourself and your life by the ‘quality of life’ that you are leading and not by the amount of material you are consuming, not by accumulating heaps and heaps of notes, gold and silver, owning estates, or if you have 200 people working under you. Think!! Change your definition of rich, beautiful and successful.

Only a true spiritual man is happy and successful in life. Someone who has understood the mystery of life, someone who has solved his complex human mind problems with the help of deep connection with the Almighty God, who has understood that this world is a temporary residence where we are supposed to give more than we take, who never looks back and does not even count his innumerable good karmas. Someone who is always rejoicing without getting any gain or success, someone who forgives all in spite of their ill temper and behaviour and someone who loves to pray and talk to god is a blessed soul. Such a person is extra ordinary, he is special, his life becomes extra ordinary.

So judge your life and yourself on this criteria and now make your life extra ordinary. It is not the number of years that we live, but the quality of life that we spend here. At this moment while explaining, I remember Abhimanyu, the star of Mahabharat. He was barely 16 years old when he died an unfortunate and tragic death in the hands of capricious and  wicked Kauravas. But he did a spectacular job by tilting the fate of the war. He helped the Pandavas in the war by not allowing Dronacharya, who had vowed to kill Yudhisthir after the death of Bhishmapitamah, either by  capturing or killing him and hence bringing the war to an end in their favour. Though Abhimanyu was such a young lad, but his contribution towards Pandavas and the human society at large was huge. He took on the responsibility of changing the course of the war and has created a place for himself in history for heroic, dauntless courage. So who lives better and how?

People who have a sense of awareness and consciousness or people who are awake all their lives and live each day in awareness, wakefulness and gratitude are the ones who live their lives truly well.

(Bhishmapitamaha, Panchali or Draupadi, Dronacharya, Dhritrashtra and Abhimanyu are characters from Mahabharat epic. I have picked these characters as Mahabaharat is a very fascinating epic of Indian history. Lord Ram’s character is from another great epic Ramayana)

How to cope up with waves of mental distractions-II

#42

In the last article I had quoted 3 verses from Bhagwat Geeta and had also said that the essence and practice is the key to its learning and living this great scripture.

‘Practice what you preach’ came true in my life. There was a mild storm on the domestic front last week. I was cautious and watchful all the time of this fact and told myself never mind what happens I will bring back my mind on thoughts and wisdom of God by maintaining full faith in Him and I was also convinced that I am under his unfaltering protection and tutelage so everything is going to be alright in the end. So during the turbulence, I made sure that I make conversation with God inside me and seek his advice and help so that my mind does not go astray. I was unable to practice meditation during this period because of too much physical activity and mental turbulence. Nonetheless, towards the end of the week, once again in the afternoon after completion of my domestic chores, the house that I live in began to vibrate soothing and recuperating vibes which I felt were moving towards and entering my heart centre specifically. Deep sense of relaxation and peace overcame me and I went inside my room to rest and to be away from worldly entanglements for some time at least.

While resting, I remembered Mahavatar Babaji and was thinking how he came to my rescue just a few days ago by giving me very good counsel. As I remembered Him with overwhelming faith and devotion at that moment, He appeared again in a subtle form to give me further timely spiritual guidance for coming days. By now, I am accustomed to His extra ordinary presence in the form of sheer Divinity and recognize His speechless, serene arrival. My atmosphere for some time becomes very peaceful, pure and gentle, so different from the normal that we experience every day. I thanked Him for giving me those benevolent peaceful, balmy vibrations and I expressed a desire to Him that I wish to follow those 3 verses of Geeta in practical terms more so in times of turbulence. All He said was “Go to attend group meditation” which is held on weekends.

As Sunday arrived, in spite of no possibility of me making it to the meditation hall because of freaky stormy weather and heavy rainfall I did go, though I reached late. It was obvious to me that God’s Grace was with me because of those Babaji’s blessed words of instructions.

Even that one hour session was very beneficial and fruitful. The cleansing of my mind and body was done there. I had accumulated the karmic dust of someone to whom I was helping overcome the excess baggage of fruit of actions of previous lives. The dirt and its fatigue was washed off so effortlessly in that sitting as if there was no trouble at all!!

Please recall in- What is the purpose of my life? there is a very important paragraph highlighted by me which is the essence of that whole article. Babaji had explained to me in the dream sequence in  very early hour that-

“The main aim of meditation is to be able to concentrate and focus on God in depth and duration while the other benefits of spiritual meditation are just its by-products”

Now since the past many weeks as I feel very cheerful and energetic again, I have a desire of stepping up and advancing in meditation practice by increasing its depth and duration but I do not know how. I have been praying silently in my heart and asking Guruji, Sri Paramhansa Yogananda, my mentor, who initiated me in Yoga and Dhyana and also to Shri Mahavatar Babaji, my Param Guru who is responsible of giving me a new lease of life figuratively and literally. I have always believed and lived by a strong conviction and belief that if you quietly pray to God and address your heartfelt desires for positive development, they are always answered. God really listens and responds to all our innocent and selfless askance.

Today morning, while in dhayan or concentration on God in those quiet hours of early morning when only one little bird was twittering in gaiety and the sun was still resting, I again recalled the dialogue between Bhagwan Krishna and his foremost disciple Arjuna as mentioned in the verses of Bhagwat Geeta in the last article. Arjuna expresses dissatisfaction and complains that his mind is uncontrollable like the wind and is never at ease and steady. So Krishna gives him a yukti, a strategy to fight and control the agitating mind. He advises Arjuna to meditate on God to control his frittering mind and also to be dispassionate about the earthly and materialistic affairs. When my mind was completely focused in the mid space between the two eye brows, Shri Mahavatar Babaji explained explicitly to me that- “Now your body has become fit enough to take the load of intensive physical exercise and intensive meditation practices. So increase your intensity of meditation”

I used to wonder many times before how one can get depth in meditation on which Babaji threw some light and gave me insight by saying,

“Depth in meditation comes by increasing the duration. If you meditate on God continually for a long period, you will achieve depth. When you attain depth gradually, the duration will increase simultaneously because the mind will be completely dissolved in God communion little by little”

What Krishna elucidates in those verses, Mahavatar Babaji  clarified the shloka for me.

He said, “Whenever you have time in between hectic activities,  release your mind from those capturing thoughts, that’s Vairagya or dispassion. Vairagya is not sannyas or relinquishing of duties. Vairagya or dispassion is releasing and purging the mind of the redundant and repetitive thoughts of the past and future. Empty out your mind from thoughts about people and of people to avoid cluttering, storing so that the space in the mind can be filled up with constructive positive thoughts. Save and conserve positive energies for that big task for a great cause, a noble mission.

Frittering of mind is the nature of mind. Meditation helps in developing and composing composure, tranquility and poise even during turbulence. It is only with regular practice of meditation that the mind is developed to become a vessel, a receptor and a receiving station to receive higher powers as well as supernatural powers to discover Nature and its functioning. And for the development of Super-Mind, it is developed by receiving very powerful potent vibrations of supernatural powers from higher space in the cosmic universe.”

For the first time I understood that meditation is such a good activity or positive karma, so full of vitality and benefits and why don’t I devote more time to it in spite of the overactive days. Then I understood that to be able to meditate frequently and in intensity I need more subtle energy which will come once I close my mind from its wandering or frittering habits during the day which is going unnoticed. I also observed when there was excessive futile mental actions, the strength in the body declines as was visible to me because I could not do my daily physical exercises so well during this time period. Most of the energy from my total energy was being used up in those repetitive wandering thoughts was clear to me now.  Therefore, I decided to plug in those holes so that the mind could function optimally and no brain energy was being wasted. I did exactly that.

In the next following days also, I have decided to follow this great piece of advice and knowledge given to me by Babaji which I am sharing with you now.

I can strengthen and improve the power of my mind to achieve what I wish to achieve in future. To make my mind steady, composed and powerful and also peaceful, I will repeatedly practice bringing my mind back again and again to the centre to focus and concentrate on God. But before the mind is brought back, it has to be cut off from the external source thereby also practicing vairagya or dispassion.

It is better to safeguard the wandering mind and stop it from so many future errors and suffering from futile actions of the wandering mind. It is for our own good that we practice curbing and focusing the thoughts by bringing it back again and again on God and self realizations by thinking of faith, devotion, hope and aspiration. We should also pursue some type of meditation techniques so that the mind becomes stronger, powerful yet peaceful in nature. There will be storms, turbulence and difficulties that we will have to encounter in future, life does not stop here. Our efforts of internalizing the mind will help us to give us peace, composure and tranquility of mind.

I pray to my dear Divine Father and Gurus to bless us all who are striving in their efforts to control their minds to give them the will power and mental strength to meditate deeply in depth and duration on Thee!!
